  • Missed mystery calls

My new electronic voice message system (came with my ISP's telephone service) also notes missed calls, which of course my answering machine never did.

So I got home tonight to a glut of calls from what appears to be area code 151 and also one from area code 115.

Area code 151 appears to the area code for two locations in India and multiple locations in the UK ... and I don't know anybody in any of those places (although if ever I get over there again I really must visit Bootle and Maghull ... and I do know the Beatles have a connection to Liverpool ...)

I'm guessing telemarketers are best ... scammers at worst ...

The correct answer is: All of the above.

Telemarketers and scammers both use robocalling to dial multiple numbers simultaneously. We get a lot of phantom calls with no one on the line.

I have noticed that if there is a "beep" after I answer it always a robocall.

I get these types of calls every day. I never pick up. I get at least one call every day from an 844 area code - don't know anybody in that code; and several other calls which are from numbers that are nearly identical. Checking online, I found that all of these numbers are associated with robocalls and scammers.

It's annoying, but I just wait until they hang up and then delete the "missed call."
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

See if your isp supports nomorobo which is a service that catches robo calls for free. It doesn't stop completely but it helps. If only my cellphone could use it I would be happy.

As the Do Not Call is such a joke, I don't take calls I don't recognize. That is especially the case during election seasons as we have here in in Illinois right now.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

            Quoted for truth.

I love my caller ID. I have come home to find 15 missed calls with no message left.

I am debating as to whether to get a telezapper or just add the SIT tone to the beginning of my message.

To be fair, DoNotCall blocks the overwhelming majority of *legitimate* annoying calls (aside from politicians, charities, etc)...I just see it as a way to be that much more confident that mystery calls are scammers, and I prepare to treat them accordingly

btw -- There's also a service provided by the same agency (FCC??) that lets you opt out of those damned "pre approved credit card" snailmail offers. I signed up for that a decade ago and I think I've received maybe ONE since. Note that signing up electronically keeps you opted out for something like 2 years; you need to print out and sign a form to make it permanent.

                Also, seconded on NoMoRobo.

                  .
Similar rule applies down here in Aussieland for a Do Not Call Register, although most people also have an unlisted number for that reason.

I've dealt with this at work by printing out a list of the contact numbers for the mentors I deal with and pinning it to my cubicle wall. If I don't recognize the number, I let it go to voicemail and I call them back afterwards. This has backfired on me on more than one occasion though, when I get the rare call from a student wondering about their mentor.

For the unlisted ones, I just let it go to my voicemail, where they'll find a message saying that I don't pick up blocked calls, and I won't call them back if they don't leave a message with a phone #.

There's a reason for that. Those jagoffs exempted themselves from the DNC when it was passed. It's bullshit, but what can you do? However, I've been known to get quite nasty when the calls are repetitive. On the last one, after getting 3-4 calls regarding the same candidate, I lost it. I told the caller that not only was I not going to vote for her stooge, but if she called back, I'd carry the phone into the garage...and give her an earful of England's finest After that, the calls from that guy's office mysteriously stopped

Same deal with the Post-Gazette. We get loads of those calls at work during their subscription drives. Telling them not to call doesn't work, nor does telling them to fuck off. The only thing that *does* work, is to threaten them with a harassment lawsuit.

I know, that I should just let such calls go to voicemail. But it's pretty annoying to have the phone ringing, and it tends to drive the cats nuts.
