At 5 minutes after 8, our internet went down. After resetting the modem, our internet came back online, but our connection to the main branch did not. Calling the main branch, we learned they had no internet. And since nearly all of our work is done via the servers at the main branch, we cannot do most of our work.

We have no access to the mainframe. No loan or deposit software. No email. Our ATM is down. Our online banking is down. The tellers can't look up accounts or print receipts. We can't even use our VOIP lines to call the main branch - we have to dial long distance.

3-1/2 hours later, it's still down, and nobody can give us an ETA for when it will be fixed. But bank management refuses to call it and send everybody home. So we sit here doing nothing.

Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

That sucks (especially when customers waltz in and get pissed)...but are they at least paying you to sit around and do nothing? (They have to)

True. We did have a few customers upset, but it was a quiet morning in the lobby. The main branch reconnected around lunchtime, and we were able to catch up on our work.

Might as well chill out and enjoy it. I recall one time when our computers went down at work. It lasted until about 1/2 an hour before the end of my shift. I took some messages, but it was a slow day, so I mostly talked with co-workers, straightened my desk, etc.

Another time our phones went out.

We've had similar situations to what you've described.

These generally come in one of several flavours, those being:

          - Learning Management System and/or website down.
          - Internet being down, phones still working.
          - Internet being down and phones NOT working.
          - Internet fine, but emails screwy.

One such incident was shortly after we all returned to work from the Christmas shutdown, only to find that the servers were overheating. They were loud enough that I could hear it from the other side of the room when the door to the server room was open

I mostly spent the time tinkering with Adobe Acrobat.
