  • Complain because I can't help 10 people at once

I was in the makeup aisle on the phone with a guy who wanted me to find some specific items for his wife. Another guy stood and waited for me to finish. I then went to him and he needed me to check in the back for something. Okay, I agree and then the phone rings. Service desk lady asks me if we have something in stock. It's in the same aisle we're in so I take a quick look. Yes, we have it. I'm obviously in a hurry to get off the phone to help this guy that's waited so long. Well, service desk lady asks me to wait a minute so she can send the customer over to see where the item is (even though I told her where.. *sigh*). The customer comes over and I show her the item. Okay, NOW I can look in the back for this poor guy, finally.

    Nope, two women stop me.

They want to know if we have this very specific item in cosmetics. I'm not positive, and obviously don't have time to look. I get on my phone to page a worker (who doesn't have a phone because she's only doing returns or go-backs, whatever term you're familiar with). Suddenly my phone dies. The batteries our dept phones use have been fucked up lately, the phones will randomly die sometimes. Great timing! I'm visibly frustrated at this point, but tell the ladies I will need to get someone to come help them because I'm supposed to be helping someone else. Someone will be over, I tell them.

Guess what they did? Found the nearest manager and complained about me. Clearly what I need to do is clone myself so that I'm not so damned incompetent that I can't help ten people at once, right? I told my boss what happened, so I'm not in trouble or anything, just pissed about people....

Yup, the actual story of my entire time at the Fabric Store. The only plus side was I never got complaints, because the customers couldn't find a manager since they were busy helping other people. I mean, maybe they did complain but I never got in trouble. I can't tell you how many times customers hovered and got visibly upset if I didn't immediately stop helping the first customer in order to help them. Grow up, people. You're "adults." You dressed yourself. You got yourself to the store, either by driving or getting a ride or whatever. Waiting your turn in a clearly understaffed store shouldn't turn you into freaking toddlers getting told it's bedtime.

It would be better if your company used walkies. I often think that in our local employee-owned grocery store. They still do the interrupt-the-music PA system thing. That was one thing I liked about Red Circles: walkies.

I wonder if they complained that they didn't think there were enough employees helping people, and the manager made it all about you?

The fabric store used headsets+walkies. They're only helpful if people can hear you and are willing to respond. If there's only like 4 employees in the whole store, they don't have time to respond. They worked well... During the holiday season when we had more staff.

Very true, or it's one of those customers that think NO = Rude.

They claimed I just stormed away and didn't say I'd get someone else to help. Right.

I too, have experienced this........when I was at Macy's, the "fashion watch" counter was my least favourite place to be, because customers could be bad about all showing up at once and expecting to be helped. One of the worst incidents was when I was helping a customer with a watch band adjustment, and suddenly a middle-aged man, an older couple, and a woman with teen girls all decided to show up and want me to help them.

Used to deal with this all of the time. I would just tell people that I am currently with a customer and that I would be with them in a little while. If they got huffy, I would actually tell them to their face that "What if it was you that I was helping and another customer wanted me to help them instead of you?"
That would shut them up real quick! :-)
