  • Cobra Kai

    Trailer:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCwwxNbtK6Y

This actually looks pretty good! If I had YouTube Red I might watch a few episodes.

Though I think I might have a hard time getting behind the Cobra Kai and Johnny.

    Daniel: "I kicked his face"
Finally, something that calls Daniel-san out for a move that should have gotten him disqualified on the spot. Kinda interesting that it looks like they're setting him up as the bad guy, or at least, an anti-hero and/or asshole. Could be interesting

Johnny Lawrence isn't exactly portrayed as a nice guy, either.

Although watching the "final" fight between Johnny and Daniel at the end of the original movie, when the Cobra Kai sensei tells Johnny to "sweep the leg", there's this look of disbelief and then fear on Johnny's face. So it's probably more a situation where the sensei corrupted Johnny. But it stayed with him.

But when Johnny did sweep the leg, he also kicked Daniel in the face. See clip here:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wd7PvbJece8

He also punched Daniel in the face (also shown in the clip). Do punches to the face not lead to elimination?

      Shouldn't that have eliminated Johnny?

It's been SO damn long that I decided to look it up -- and found a fair amount of info because of course I did, this is the interweb.

        - not a nice guy -- True. Maybe Johnny's an anti-villain in this case? Heck, that just makes it more interesting

        - Punches to the face are allowed under tourney rules, they just don't score any points; neither do any below-the-belt hits

        - Kicks to the head are expressly forbidden and probably should have gotten Daniel kicked out; at least one Kai guy got kicked out for a violation, but not all of them. However, as the protagonist, Daniel had plot armor. Maybe the "judge" decided that if he let one head-kick slide (Johnny's), it was OK to let the other (Daniel's) slide, as well...?

        - The reason "sweep the leg" was so bad was, while it was not illegal, and it would not have scored any points, the intention was speficially to sweep a leg they already knew was injured

It's possible Johnny thinks he's doing a good thing He's taking kids who are apparently being bullied, and teaching them to be bullies.

Sweep The Leg. Do you have a problem with that?

Exactly. As my "Lawful evil" character said in a recent D&D game...It's all a matter of perspective.

I think I would have liked it better if Johnny and Danny had teamed up to open a new dojo.

They could call it "Miyagi Kai".

If we're talking about rules at martial arts competitions, it varies wildly depending on the type of martial art, and the type of competition, and that many would've had much laxer rules back when the movie first came out (and helped popularize karate in the first place).

                      Despair.com used to have a t-shirt:

                      https://despair.com/products/crane-technique

that read: "The Crane Technique. Failing to save your dork ass since 1984."

Heh. Mine wasn't quite so fanatical. When asked by other group members why he was the onyl person who could safely handle the sword that could cause earthquakes under Good-aligned (only) enemies, he did his best to distract them with comments along the lines of "Good and evil are really just societal concepts anyway; pay them no mind." and "I thought you wanted to get PAID for this fetch quest, do you not...?"
