  • Thanking someone for opening a door?

Like most (all?) of you, I come from a culture where we thank people for opening doors.

But that brings up an interesting question.

At my workplace, doors are close to one another. How often should you thank the same person for opening a door for you if it's within the "same" interaction?

For instance, if someone opens a door for me (or holds a door open), and I thank them, and then 20 or 30 feet later there's another door, and they open THAT door for me, too, should I thank them again?

How's that work, in your opinion?

I usually thank per door on the rare occasions where it's not me holding the door.

Each individual door they hold for you is another favour, so it deserves another thanks.

If you want to avoid this, then simply walk a little faster and make sure you get to the door first and hold it for them!

I generally say thanks again on the second door if that happens to me.

I agree: one thanks per door. It's hard to overdo courtesy.

A stranger holding a door? I say thanks. At work I smile and/or make eye contact. Maybe an audible thanks if they stood and waited for me, but if I just came through at the same time as them? Nah. Nobody does.

In your example, multiple doors close to each other, I would not care if someone only thanked me once and I would feel weird saying it repeatedly. But I live in a "cold" part of the country, where we avoid eye contact at all costs. *shrug*
