  • So an inspection means some people might not get to eat lunch?

We had another health inspection today....R told me that the store actually failed a previous one (I suspect it had something to do with the cockroach infestation...we treat but they keep coming back so it must be coming from another part of the building) and that's why there's been like 3 inspections in as many weeks. I wish I knew the exact reason for the failure although if it involved anything in Grocery I'm sure J would tell us.

We have three portable steam tables in the break room for staff lunch....and the past two inspection days, lunch has been late (as in it doesn't show up until my break is over). So far J has been okay with my clocking back in and scarfing down real food if I have to, but I always feel weird doing it. This time there happened to be two conventions next door, so all the QSR lines were two miles long and by the time I found out why staff lunch was late it was way too late for me to get in a line.

Someone asked chef for a reason why lunch was so late on inspection days, and we were told that the kitchen would get dinged for holding hot food on the steam tables (no heat lamps or anything so it does cool down after 2 hours or so) so that's why they had to wait until the inspectors left...something about that sounds off. Lunch has never been late during inspections until the past two; the infuriating thing for a lot of us is that there's no way to know when it's going to be late because nobody knows about inspections until that day (and while "sorry, lunch will be late today" notes have been posted in the past this no longer happens). Those of us who are lucky enough to get 30-minute breaks have some degree of leeway, but anyone who only gets 15 doesn't really have much choice. Depending on the QSR lines it can take upwards of 6-7 minutes to get food; add 2-3 minutes (longer on weekends) traversing the store to get to the break room and I can see why almost everyone opts for staff lunch.

Sounds like they are responding to getting dinged for the hot food, and perhaps dropped the "lunch will be late" signs for discretion's sake (since the inspectors would of course see them)..

That's what I figured...annoying though as a lot of people either don't bring food or don't have time to go elsewhere. I had brought something yesterday but as usual it got stolen

I'm a bit puzzled why the kitchen would get dinged for the staff meal food if it doesn't come out until after inspectors leave (they're always gone by noon)...

Or we got dinged because leftovers from the day before were found moldering in the breakroom (sometimes when I come in at 7AM the remains are still in the pans) at room temp...which I have seen many times. Once with a pasta salad with mayo I was warning people away from it, but at least one of the idjits from Facilities did eat the stuff....F mused that he wanted to get sick and try to get worker's comp for his dumbassery.

That crew isn't composed of the brightest bulbs in the shed. I've seen them stash food in the fridge for days on end and only actually eat it when it started learning to talk.

Inspectors don't like to see evidence that normal behavior is being moved out of their sight. And frankly, if leaving leftovers overnight in the breakroom is normal behavior, then the health department has good reason to lean hard on your office.

Sometimes the breakroom is actually clean when I come in at 7, sometimes I see the day crew (who gets in approximately the same time I do) cleaning it, sometimes it's a nightmare until someone higher-up than the team lead yells at someone. We do have an overnight housekeeping team, I know not what they do all night.
