  • the grumpy old man on the phone

Because this story will need some background info: in the library system I work in, we have one "main number" for library customers to call, and our "call center" staff transfer the customers to the different branches. (Each branch does have an individual phone number(s), but this is information which is NOT to be given out to the public.....it's only for staff and family members)

This morning, I was in the middle of doing the morning cash deposit, when the phone rings, and "it's Grumpy Old Man" on the phone. He was VERY adamant that someone from our number had called him three times that morning, while he was in the middle of another phone call.

I tried to get a little more information out of "Grumpy Old Man", but he wouldn't/didn't identify himself or give any details about these alleged phone calls, just seemed really irritated that I was "not getting it". He finally said something like "I repeat.....I've been called three times by your phone number today. Have a good day!", and forcefully hung up.

The only thing I could think of was that some telemarketer or scammer had spoofed our phone number, because I was the only staff member sitting by the phone at the time, and I definitely did NOT call "Grumpy Old Man".

I'm thinking that maybe *HE* misdialed the number on his caller ID. Not that he'd admit such a thing even if that turned out to be the case.

I pretty regularly see spoofed numbers on my caller ID.

I see a lot of spoofed names...the thinking there seems to be is that nobody looks too closely at the actual number, but they'll pick up if they see a name they do (or might) recognize. We're seeing an uptick in calls to our home or cell phones that start with the respective exchanges, and in some cases the entire number is only a digit or two off.

"Excuse me, I'm making perfect sense. You're just not keeping up." The Doctor

I am starting to see numbers on my landline that come up as “Fraud Likely.” I looked up some of them on Google and they were reported as the IRS or Microsoft calling about terrible problems. I wonder what sort of database my carrier is using.

For awhile I kept getting messages on my cellphone regarding software for a trucking company in Lincoln, Nebraska (I'm in Oregon.) Finally I was able to talk to a caller who called regarding that same company, to find that he was working for a software company in Massachusetts who managed the trucking company's business software. We decided the trucking company's phone number was misprinted in the computer's business directory, and he said he'd pass along that the number was wrong to his co-workers. Apparently he did, because it's been more than two years and I haven't gotten another call from either business.
