  • Need some travel type advice

OK I am going to my 40th year HS reunion which is about 500 miles away.

I have already decided to go with AirBnB because all I need is a bed and a bathroom not a full blown hotel room that costs wwwaayyy more (more like triple) than I am willing to pay per night.

Need to know a decent site for plane tickets and rental car. for the car should I stick to the major car rental sites or 3d party?????

the same question goes for the plan tickets.

Normally I would just pack up my car and drive the 8 hours to my home town BUT my POS delivery car (if I can get another year out of this thing I will be lucky) would NOT make it the 30 miles of highway to the next major city south of me. It would be great if I could rent a car and actually drive the rental all the way (round trip + stops from locations I will be visiting for the last time) but have no way of knowing how car rental companies view renting a car for 5 or 6 days and driving say 1300 miles using one of their cars.

Any good suggestions?? I want to book my stuff before say Labor Day or right after.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

That is why they have unlimited miles. I have been researching rates for a possible road trip from Atlanta to Maine.

Give one a call. I would suggest Enterprise. They tend to have good prices and you probably don't have to drive to the airport to get it. If you are not flying between major airports, this may be cheaper.

I use a third party website to research the prices. Then book direct. Call and ask if they can match the third party. I have not seen good discounts from airlines and rental cars on the third party site.

Don't forget to use your AAA, AARP and other potential discounts.

Seconded on Enterprise. I, thankfully, haven't had the need in recent years to need to book a rental car, but I've known people to use it and they've had good reviews of the service.

Look up some places in the area where you're going to be at, just because there might be a few places that are cheaper when you walk in rather than online pricing. Maybe you can also couch surf if you're not going to be doing more then a few nights, what about family/friends/other people you know? Might be able to get away with sleeping in a spare bedroom for the price of a few meals.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

OK cool Enterprise is being contacted. I was wondering if they had unlimited miles or not. OR if I could take the car out of state. I would rather drive as it is way cheaper and driving is my "thing".

As for couch surfing no family or fiends left in my home city (will be there like 5 or 6 days Thursday (inbound) to Tuesday (outbound)

Most likely this will be the last time I will be able to make it back to home city for a while or if at all.

Agreed with this. One Mrs. TGK found out (the hard way) that the booking direct has perks (like free breakfast) that go out the window with third-party sites (going to their commission, no doubt).
As for other discounts, check the credit card you intend to use--you may be surprised.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Do you know anyone in the airline industry? They can get you non-revenue passes. The last time I flew from here to CA round trip it was $160.

I'll chime in on just renting a car, if you're going to have to rent one anyway just use it for the entire trip.
