  • Mother of all screw-ups

I've made a lot of mistakes at work, but this has taken the cake.

    Wednesday afternoon-night shift.
I clock in and have a chat with my supervisor, everything's good in the world so far. There's a guest checking in late tonight, so we've charged the card and sent the late message. All I have to do before closing time is put the key in the room and block the door.

I'm a bit chipper right now because of the coffee I just had. About the middle of the afternoon, a lady comes up asking for some extra milk, asking some details about the restaurant and how she can't work her TV to find the cable channels. So I get the red master key to go to the storage to get the milk and then go out to the woman's room. This is when things started to go wrong.

I think what must have happened is that I put down the portable office phone and the key on the bench next to the TV to fiddle with the remote. When I left the room, I took the phone but not the key.

The last guest checks in at 7:30 and I do a last check of the office to make sure everything is in order. I notice one of the master keys is missing and can't remember if there were 2 or 3 there when I arrived. I retrace my steps to all the places I went to during the shift and realize I left it in the guest's room. I try to ring up the room at 7:45 but they don't answer. I just leave a message in the book for the next worker in the morning and retrace my steps again to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I'm pretty much panicking at this point because I'd have to fork over $100 if we couldn't find the key. Without anything else to do, or so I thought, I close up at 10 minutes past closing time still sweating from stress. I thought what happens will happen.

    Then came this morning.

I got a message from my supervisor why they got a call at 2 in the morning from a guest who couldn't get in their room. That's when I realized that in my panic last night I forgot to put the guest's key in the room. I got a chewing out over the phone and I'll no doubt get another one on my next shift. I also rang up my coworkers to apologize to them. We're definitely not getting the guest back.

I've been aware of this problem a lot lately and I can't seem to shake it. I make an effort to improve myself but end up going back to square one. I do things unknowingly that end up causing problems for me and everyone around me. I'm a lazy idiot who procrastinates and can't seem to do anything right. Sure, I get the small jobs done, but the big jobs are the ones I overlook. There's no excuse.

I have really bad jitters and anxiety that end up hindering my concentration if something goes wrong. I get tunnel vision, something I'm trying to learn to overcome for my studies, and a problem has to be corrected unless there isn't another way. It probably doesn't help that when I'm bored at work, I'm on my phone or read. The phone is the worst of course since it's filling my brain with junk and slowing me down. I've been in this job longer than I should be and I have had to realise by now to keep my mind pre-occupied with something other than looking through Facebook and Twitter.

I'm going to prepare myself with the reckoning I'm gonna face with my supervisor. Work is really volatile right now as everyone seems to be going through an attitude phase and my mistake is the last thing we needed. I better start making to do lists at the start of every shift as well. Hoo boy, I'm about to enter a world of hurt.

Of course, a lot is going to depend what management thinks of the situation. What I would recommend is using this as a "teaching moment".

Think of ways to prevent these events from happening again.
Discuss these ideas with your manager(s). Get their feedback and recommendations.
Set a time table for followup and review.

The key take aways are to accept responsibility for what happened and to show that you want to improve yourself.

    Good luck!

Don't leave us hanging! Was the master key recovered?

I tend to have memory issues, so I write out a to-do list for each day and check things off as I go along. I also try to keep a small notepad and pen in my pocket so I don't forget things before I get back to my desk.

I don't have to tell you that your mobile phone is an issue; to avoid temptation turn it off and leave it in your bag. Stick to reading.

Yep, we found the master key. It was in the room I mentioned.
God knows why the guest didn't bring it back up sooner
