  • How to tell someone they are a menace on the roads..

OK so...this weekend I had to go away to a Scrabble tournament and one of the gentlemen from the club drove us there and back. How we made it in one piece I don't know. On the way there was heavy rain and mist and the inside of his car had condensation that would not clear. On the way back it was dark.

    Main problems are:
He has no concept of direction it seems-we hit a kerb twice whilst turning around as he couldn't see where the road was due to condensation on the inside of the car.On the way back we had to slam on the brakes as he 'didn't realize there was a bend there.'Going around corners we would drift out wide and at least once ended up in the oncoming lane.We ended up straddling the centre line several times, including once on the slip road where we were heading straight towards the central barrier because he couldn't decide whether to be in the staying-on lane or the exit lane.

He has no concept that there are other people around.Twice whilst looking for the site,he saw the sign so stopped without any indication-once across a roundabout and then instead of realizing he had missed the exit, reversed off and drove the wrong way down the road.

And he meanders.Coming down the motorway,we would drift from one side of a lane to another without him realizing-it was only the bdonkbdonkbdonk of the rumble strips that alerted him to the fact.Once we ended up going along the hard shoulder.
Once we drifted so about a quarter of the car was in the next lane as something was coming up behind in that lane.

I seriously thought we would end up in an accident at some point.I have decided I will not be in his car again, but how I can tell him that I don't think he is safe to be on the roads?

I'm afraid I can't help with the telling your friend that he isn't safe to drive (I'm blunt as anything and flat-out told one of the partners in the firm that I am never getting in the car with him again), but if you have your friend's car details I would encourage you to pass them on to the police along with the explanation above. The police won't be able to do anything from a verbal report (although they might decide to check up on CCTV in the area to see if they can catch him) but they will be aware to watch for him in the future.

The thing is, friend or not, he is going to kill someone one of these days if the way you describe his driving is his normal driving style. If the police know to look out for him, then he may get pulled over if he tries any of those stunts again. This may be the wake-up call he needs to work on his driving skills.

One long-running argument I had with my mum when I was younger was that she knew one of the volunteers of the charity warehouse she was manageress for drove to and from the warehouse drunk. I said that she should be calling the cops the moment said volunteer left so that the police could try to catch the volunteer, but mum wouldn't. I pointed out more than once that she knew said volunteer was driving drunk and she didn't do anything, which meant that anyone injured/killed by the volunteer would be her responsibility as well as the volunteer's as mum knew and didn't do anything to stop it.

Give him a list of those incidents and suggest he take a driving course before he kills someone - and/or himself. If he doesn't take it well, at least you know you tried. And I'd let the cops know too, as Greek_Jester says.

Too bad you're in the UK, or I'd suggest nominating them for Canada's Worst Driver

(In all seriousness, if you can get your hands on that show, do so - there are quite a few cases like that and they do not hesitate in showing the consequences of their actions)
