  • Just get your stuff and go

Most of the customers I deal with at the Supermarket are decent enough and have been accomodating with me still learning things around the store. A few, however, aren't so nice about things and, thankfully, are few and far between -- this one, though, I was warned about as soon as I came in.

I worked a rare non-closing shift today and as soon as I got into the deli today, I was warned about a lady that had been circling the store looking for anyone she hadn't been helped by yet. Okay, fine, whatever, no one else seems to worry about the customer so I'm not, I brush it off and go about my business doing what needs to be done. Get about a half hour into my five hour shift and the lady I was warned about shows up -- she kept to back of the small group of people wanting to get meat and cheese sliced until she got to the front. Since I was "a new face" she made sure that she got helped by me and only me.

I didn't see why I was warned by my coworkers since, well, the lady was nice and fine as I got most of her stuff sliced up, packed, and tagged as I went along. Then as soon as I finished the last part of her order she decided to start complaining about how things were sliced, how the bag didn't look right, the price tag wasn't on the bag properly, how long it took her to get help, how long she'd been in the store, etc etc. I just stood there for a moment like a deer in headlights before I told the customer that I showed her how the meat and cheese were sliced before I got on the rest of the order and that I only got in not too long ago, so I couldn't vouch how much time she wasted in the store. And there was nothing wrong with how the deli bags looked or how the tags were placed, only one other person has had a problem with it and he was told to STFU about it and not in a nice way.

The customer decided right then and there that she needed to throw a fit because she had spent "the last four hours" in the store and had hoped that I was going to be "the best person to help her" since I had seemed so "nice and perfect" for the job. Then she demanded the deli manager, who had been close by and was not amused that she, the manager, had to continue listening to a customer berate her employees once again. The customer was told to either get her meat and cheese and get out or don't take her order and get out, in the most "polite" way.

Customer chose to get her stuff and leave, hopefully never to be seen for quite a while.

[As an end note: I did tell my manager that I'm not used to management backing up us employees, I was told as long as we didn't sass the customers too much we'd be good.]
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

Wow! That's amazing. Someone in upper management had a worker's back? Did you bribe them with chocolate, or is it that just about everyone in the store has seen this woman's show before and they're tired of it?
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

I vote the second option. Seen it, heard it, tired of it. I wonder how often she does this?

I vote for the second option as well, there seems to be several customers that management is tired of dealing with and isn't going to cave in going forward. I'm assuming that the customer in question has been coming to the store for a while now, judging by the reactions if my coworkers.
