  • A/C question

I have a sleeve-mounted air conditioner (Frigidaire, if it matters). I don't know the age or the model number offhand.

The "check filter" light went on, so I pulled the filter. UGH.

I vacuumed it thoroughly and put it back.

"Check filter" light is still on.

    Any suggestions?

If it the plastic mesh/webbing, wash and rinse it. Also look to see if there is a filter reset.

You might be able to press the button again to turn it off, I have to on mine.

It was indeed the 're-set' button.

Yeah, that was just a tad embarrassing.

The filter could use an actual washing but you're not supposed to put it back while wet (or even damp) so that will have to wait until fall.

You could wash it now and use a hair dryer to dry it out so it can be reinstalled.

I've been putting mine back damp, does that harm anything? It's not wet wet, but damp.

I don't know whether it actually matters. The instructions say not to, but ....

It could cause ice to build up inside if the AC doesn't have enough downtime for it to melt off the coils. That will cause the unit to overheat, the fan to fail, or the unit will simply not put out any cold air.

Okay, well ... DEFINITELY waiting for cooler weather, when I can turn it off for a considerable amount of time then!

It should be okay as long as you are still getting the normal about of cool air out of it. It's just if you notice that it's not putting out cool air or the amount of air goes down. If that happens, unplug it, take the front cover off and go spend the day somewhere else, oh and make sure the drain is clear. It's surprising how much water can come out.

Another thing to do is clean the filter, put it back and run the "fan only" setting until it dries. Assuming your unit has a "fan only" setting.

Many years ago a friend's window A/C unit wasn't cooling. I took out the filter. It was full of lint and frozen solid. Somehow we managed to clean it and get the unit to working.

That reminds me SO MUCH of my years in my late mother's house when the carbon monoxide detector would go off ...

... and it would turn out that the battery (or the entire unit) needed replacing ... but of course it always went off at 3 in the morning, which doesn't exactly make you want to fall asleep lest you not wake up ...
