  • Well, there goes that break

Wasn't sure whether this belonged here or in "Cursing Out Coworkers."

Pre-COVID, our company decided to bring a kiosk of Mermaid Coffee Chain into our stores. Despite COVID the kiosk is a reality ... although the chairs and tables are nowhere to be seen.

For whatever reason, the stores were in charge of hiring the staffing, rather than Mermaid Coffee Chain (hence my wondering if this is a Coworker situation).

On my last shift I decided to get a drink from there. There was no lineup and one person ahead of me, as well as someone standing at the pickup spot. There was one staffer on duty, obviously a newbie (he kept checking his cheat sheets ).

Employee takes care of person ahead of me and then comes to me. I pointed to the woman who was still waiting at the pickup spot. "I think she was here first."

    Employee: "Oh, she's already ordered."

Me: *wonders why he's not making her order ... perhaps she's ordered food and it's heating?*

I put in my order and he tells me, in a completely flat and soulless voice, that he's tried that particular drink and "It's really good." Oookaaayyy ... could you possibly be LESS enthused??

I move towards the pickup spot, trying to maintain my distance from the other customer. He mixes up her drink and hands it to her.

Someone new comes up to the counter ... and he goes to take her order before making my drink.

THAT was why the other customer was standing so patiently there. She wasn't waiting for food; he just kept moving on to other customers. Is it just me, or is this completely bass-ackwards? Why not finish with one customer before moving on to others? It's possible that this is how he was told to work ("If they've already paid for their drink, they won't leave") but it's really crappy service, IMO. I think I spent close to 10 of my 15 minutes waiting for my drink.

All I know is that it's reminding me of my Bullseye cafe days and they're not good memories. That kind of food service sucks all around. There aren't enough staff, like, ever.
