That was my Sunday afternoon ruined.
So there was this guest in one of the rooms who checked in Friday. I wasn't the one who checked them in, but they did come down later with some teens to check into contact tracing. Anyway, they were in for 3 nights and had to do a cash security deposit because who knows why.
I got off my morning shift and stopped at a shopping centre for lunch. I suddenly get a message in my chat app and i've been notified by the person on duty that the fire alarm went off and alerted the fire department (the smoke alarms are linked to the fire alarms which then send out a call). Over the chat I'm told that the fire fighters inspected the room (you can guess which) and that there was a pretty heavy smoke smell and that it was also laced with pot.
Since my supervisor is taking some vacation days, I had to attend as the most senior employee; which meant driving back a half hour. I get back to the motel and we discuss what to do. After a lot of faffing about, we discovered that the guy was away at work at a construction site and the only people in the room were their son, daughter and two of there friends who suspiciously went for a walk after the alarm went off.
To shorten it down, the guy didn't get back until 4:30 and we told him that due to the possibility of pot use in the room we would have to remove them from the motel without refund, plus having to pay a part of the false alarm fee to the fire department. Naturally the guy went ballistic on us and refused to pay. He went back to the room got the teens, dropped the key off and then threatened to report us to the police and to take us to court (heard that one before).
Dude, it's right there on the sign in form. You will be held responsible for any damages and incidentals you cause during your stay which extends to those under you. If you were planning to leave a bunch of teens in the room unsupervised the least you could have done is made sure that they weren't smoking in the room; which there are signs in the reception and room for.
So that's the story of my Sunday afternoon ruined. Now if you excuse me, i need to chug a bucket of tea.
