  • shouldn't there be a big jar of coleslaw?

I go to a restaurant (not fast food) to order food to go. The fish baskets come with a 2oz container of cole slaw. I order a pint of cole slaw. I see the waitress get from the tray of cole slaws several 2 oz containers of slaw and open them up and dump them in the empty pint. I was thinking, "should't the cole slaw come from a big plastic conainer or a big bag of cole slaw?"

This wasn't a fast food restaurant, where they ran out of pints. I assume a fast food has pre-packed sides. Like KFC proably receives their mash potatoes, corn, mac and cheese, etc, already packed in the proper containers.

I was expecting another waitress or a cook tell her off but no one saw what she did.

I could be wrong about how things work in a restaurant, I never worked in a restaurant, just did food demos. But I read in stories about restaurants and how they do stuff.

You're absolutely correct; all of those cups of slaw had to be in some larger container at some point. Was this near the end of the day? They might have had all of their current supply already portioned out; that's the first thing that comes to mind on this one.

It was 5:30 pm, and they close at 10pm. I was thinking too that they might have ran out from the bigger container, but that to me seems unlikely. I can't imagine they used up the big container to make all the small 2oz. Unless someone decided to be busy and make the 2oz and left nothing in the bigger container, and they were told not to open a new container until the 2oz cups were gone.

Maybe I'm thinking the waitress wasn't thinking because when I ordered the main waitress was telling the cashier the proper way to put up the stores receipts and the waitress I observe serving my slaw was watching this, making me think she might be new.

A non-fast food restaurant could also receive prepacked pints from their supplier. It would cut down on wastage from a larger container, and be more sanitary these days. Your suspicion about a new employee may be correct.
