Business owners are trying to figure out why people are walking out on low paying jobs after they dump the work of three people on one person. And then they are talking about how they can't get anyone to apply. I think they need to stop blaming the unemployment money people were getting and accept that workers have found they don't have to take crap paying jobs.

Business owners created the tip system during the Great Depression so they could get away with paying people less money (i.e. forcing employees to beg customers to give them money to make up for the pay cut.) COVID is forcing them to move away from that and back to a real wage.

If memory serves it was mostly to NOT pay blacks any wages just let them earn tips as their pay

I don't know if it's true, Racket_Man, but I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if it were.

There's a fast food place where I live that has a sign on the marquee that says something like "Interviews Daily. Walk-Ins Welcome".

Some of this, though, is spineless managers and spineless corporate policies that allow customers to run roughshod over employees, with many managers taking the customers' side.

As far as tipping goes, last time I bought pizza for delivery, it was somewhere around $30. I left a $10 tip. People CAN make good money through tips, but not always.

NPR has an article up today about businesses offering signing bonuses to attract new employees, and how much BS that is. As they say in the piece, businesses need to raise wages and (I would add) benefits and hours.

I listened to this piece on the radio, and the details were slightly different, but the gist was the same.
"I look at the stars. It's a clear night and the Milky Way seems so near. That's where I'll be going soon. "We are all star stuff." I suddenly remember Delenn's line from Joe's script. Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

After Katrina, local fast food joints were offering experienced managers a whopping huge $10~11 an hour plus a $200 bonus to sign up if they could start work immediately. Sadly, for the NOLA area, that wasn't a bad deal.

Up in my neck of the woods, pretty much all of the fats food () places have "Now hiring" signs up and most have the sympathy signs saying that they are short on workers -- and yet, in the community groups I'm in, I see frequent stories from jobseekers saying that very few such places have been actually hiring anyone or even returning their phone calls.

All of the restaurants in my city having 'Now Hiring' signs in the windows as they have lost a lot of employees to jobs with the Canadian Revenue Agency, who pay a minimum of $20/hr which is better than $12.50/hr (minimum wage here) plus tips. Not to mention that working for the government means the employees get awesome health benefits, as opposed to no benefits at all while working in restaurants for just under f/t hours so the employer doesn't have to pay for benefits for their staff.

I feel sorry for the staff who remains at these places. They are overworked, and too many customers are being absolutely terrors. Mind you, we're also feeling this at the hotel and spa right now. We actually lost one of our registered massage therapists to the Canadian Revenue Agency due to how much more she makes there, so even jobs that require special training are having a hard time being filled these days.

Gee, never thought of applying to RevCan ...

What irritates me are the photos of whiny signs by employers that start off with the obligatory "Nobody wants to work anymore" and goes on to say "Please be patient with the staff who did come in today; they want to serve you."

No. No, they are almost certainly desperate enough to come in because they literally have no other choice. And if you want more workers, pay a living wage and give some benefits. AND stop whining.
