  • So...Uhm, Canada sorta lost an entire town to a fire recently......

Last week, under record high temperatures of around 121F/50C, the entire BC town of Lytton (pop. one thousand or so) burned to the ground in about ten or fifteen minutes. This was the result of just one of many wildfires triggered by the heat dome/heatwave in the region o_O

When the elements move, you don't even have time to say your prayers (not that they'll help anyway, where the elements are concerned).
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

The heat dome might have spurred it along but its origins might not have been the elements ...

Forest fires through the interior of BC are par for the course and have been for years, sadly. But they are getting so much worse as the years go by. My parents used to live between Kelowna and Penticton for years, and I was petrified of them getting caught up in a fire.

Entirely too many of the fires are caused by people from the coast who haven't the foggiest idea that having an uncontained fire is the height of stupidity. The people that live in those areas yearly have much better fire safety habits and actually pay attention to the fire restrictions that go up every year. There was one year when our family summer property went up in flames after one of my uncle's visitors thought it would be a grand idea to pour gasoline on to a pile of wood before tossing a match into it...the whole valley burned, untold loss of wildlife, and those visitors only survived because they made it into the deepest part of the creek at the bottom of the valley.
