  • Packaging WTF Part 2

It looks like the nesting dolls are at it again.

I have just received a package today after I had ordered two sets of bedsheets. They came in a plastic shipping bag. The following are the steps I had to go through to get the sheets ready for the washing machine.

    Plastic shipping bag. >
    Two plastic bags. >
Two cloth bags surrounded by a cardboard ring. >
    Two plastic bags. >
    Two bed sheet sets. >
    Two cardboard inserts.

If you're counting, that's 5 plastic bags and 4 pieces of cardboard that I need to recycle for 2 bedsheet sets.

My cousin complained about how men's dress shirts are packaged. There are in a plastic bag, folded around cardboard and tissue inserts, and held in place by many straight pins. Women's shirts come on a hanger. She had a point.

She does have a point. If you miss one of those pins, it could be a real pain in the neck.

My dad came home from a business trip complaining that his neck was rubbed raw... he'd left the cardboard inserts in the collars!

I have bought enough clothes and bedding in the last couple of years that I can confirm this. my in house recycle bin gets half full.

What bugs me is useless padding. Like when I ordered a roll of bubble wrap years ago and it came packed with air pillows. WTF? Or pillows or other soft things that come with air pillows. POINTLESS.

Sometimes those airpillows are there to stop items frome moving around during transit, But i've seen a pallet that only had one (1) deck of cards in it and filled with the airpillow...

I have received from Amazon a large box with a very small item. I wondered why a much smaller box wasn't used.

What gets put in a cardboard "envelope" vs what gets a full-size box is always a fun guessing game...

It's funny how that goes at the opposite end of the spectrum.
I had a scooter (moped) shipped to me from half a country away, it came on a pallet held in place by metal straps and then a ton of shrink-wrap.
The delivery driver took all that packaging with him, leaving just the scooter.

I bet if Amazon had to take their packaging back they'd use a lot less filler.

Ironically I have to give some kudos to Mart of Wal. I ordered a small item and the item itself came in a little plastic bag (no doubt as it would be in the store), it was mailed in a tiny plastic envelope. Very little wastage.
