  • Are you Opening?

I bloody hate it when Customers come to my till when I'm NOT open, lining up when I'm closed and starting my shift while asking me if I am opening up. Like I should be not be seen to the public or communicate to them when I'm at my till with a close sigh and the light turned off. I wish my till was in like a shed or something so I don't have to see anyone until I'm open and my window is up. I thought it was retarded at my old job working in box office and people asking if I'm open (Well you walked in the theatre didn't you?). Leave me alone until I'm open for business annoying customers!!

Well it is in the SC handbook:

If there is only one employee at the register, always be sure to ask if they are open, especially if they are looking at you expectantly and saying "can I help you?".

If there is more than one cashier visible, always go to the one who looks to be in the middle of doing something, such as counting money or moving merchandise, has their light off, and is pointedly NOT looking at you...all signals to the contrary, they really do want to help you right that moment. There is no need to ask if they are open, just plop you things on their counter and stare at them. If possible, have an animated conversation on your cell phone while doing this.

You know I'm always courteous enough to match eye contact with the cashier and wait for a nod or a head shake.

I'm a rare breed that way.

Bah, can't stand it when I have people asking if I'm open if I've been standing there for five minutes, my light full on, plastic bags at the ready.. come on!

If I see a cashier without a light on, I don't bother unless they specifically say that they're ready for customers. It makes it easier that way.

I look for the light to be on, then I look at the cashier and wait for her to not me through, then I make my move, quickly.

My favorite are the customers that walk past, stop, back up, and ask "you open?" without once looking at my light. Double points if they start putting their groceries on my belt without waiting for an answer.

I understand how you feel. I waitress in a restaurant and I open on Sunday mornings, at 7:00. I go in about 6:45 to count the money, check bathrooms to make sure they've got supplies, etc.

One Sunday I unlocked the door to go out and bring the newspapers in like I always do. I didn't re-lock the door, but the "closed signs" were both still up and I hadn't turned on the main lights yet.

Guy walks in at 6:55, saying "are you open yet?" as he walks over to a table and sits down. I told him "no wer'e not open until 7:00." He keeps sitting there, and then wants to strike up conversation with me as I'm still getting the newspapers ready. I gave him very short, curt answers so I think he finally got the message.

And I did NOT wait on him until after I had finished with the papers, turned the lights on, started the coffee, and turned the signs to OPEN.

                Stupid jerk!!

Other waitresses have told me that they've had customers come in through the BACK door, through the KITCHEN, when the front doors were still locked before we opened in the morning. I could NOT handle that and I know I would tell the customers to get OUT until we were OPEN!!!

I get that all the time... Its even more fun when I'm emptying trash out of the bins, carrying a full trash bag, standing infront of a reg with the light out and the empty cash drawer sticking out all the way. Yep, I'm open!

People will just come up and stand at the registers where I was dumping trash. No light on, no cash drawer. I won't go back and tell them that they need to go to another line. That's their problem!
