  • Unusual Credit Card situations from Stupid Credit Card Holders

#1: I'm not giving it back until after you sign it: This woman was paying a Credit card for her purchase, I ran the card on my machine and right after this conversation occured.

Stupid Lady: Can I have my card back
Me: I'm sorry I can't give it back until you sign that card
Stupid Lady: Give me back my card
Me (annoyed): I can't give it to you I have to verify the signature first
Stupid Lady: give me back my card, I will show you the slip and the back of my card

Okay I give it back to her , luckly she did show me the card and slip.

C'mon people, there is a reason why I won't give you your card back until you sign the slip.

#2: Married female uses Credit card with Maiden name on the Card and different signature: Okay this is confusing seeing as though they won't sign like the card and their ID doesn't match. Our job is strict with Credit Card Verification BTW. How is this situation handled? You tell me!! I don't even remember how I handled it but all I know is that I do get a CSM or a Manager.

#3: Company Credit Cards: People will say it's a company card when you see the signature doesn't match. There is more I'll mention but I have to leave!

hmmmm i know signatures dont match perfect, if they did then you got a forger at your desk and you should do another check...., but shouldn't they match in reason... and should one of the first things you do when you get married and are taking their name change everything that needs to be changed?
This one makes me feel like it wasnt her card...

        Using mom's card

Often I have to purchase items for my mother using my mom's card.

I get away with it for two reasons.

        1) It is a store that I go to often so they know I have not scammed them in the past.

        2) Ontario Driver's Licenses are picture ID. And they write down my license number on their copy of the bill and have me inialize it. If there were any problems they can ID who exact did the transaction.

Well if she did take off I would've Paged a code 99 to apprehend her for not letting me see the slip and the card!

I just signed my cards with my maiden name until I finally got new ones with my married name on it. Wasn't that difficult, really.

What I hate most is that verifying the signature here in the States has to happen before the card is swiped, because once the card is swiped, it's pretty much too late. The two POS (point of sale) systems that I've used did not have a cancel key if the person botched the signature. The first one had an electronic screen for people to sign, and if they took too long or didn't bother with it, then the register would spit out a slip of paper for them to sign. The other POS has the same thing now, but before it just had the paper that it would spit out to sign. So either way, once that card was swiped and the cashier proceeded with the transaction, it was done. Nothing but a post void and 24 hours could save that transaction now.

Why do you verify sig first? Here's the procedure Visa gives in their manual...

Swipe the card to request the transaction authorization.

Hold the card through the entire transaction.

While the transaction is being processed, check the card’s features and security elements to make sure the card is valid and has not been altered in any way.

Obtain authorization and get the cardholder signature on the transaction receipt.

Compare the name, number, and signature on the card to those on the transaction receipt.

If you suspect fraud, make a Code 10 call.

Yep... while the transaction is being processed. In other words, while they are charging your money that they will have to eat (or the store will) if they don't catch the fraudulent customer, and which they will pass the cost of on to the rest of us through fees and charges (or higher prices). Which could be prevented if this was done before the card was swiped. Maybe not every time, but some of the time.

But...how can you verify a signature before the transaction? Just get them to sign a random slip of paper? You have to complete the transaction to have the receipt for the customer to sign.

Because it's a MASSIVE pain in the balls (where I work, at least) to cancel a transaction AFTER it's gone through. Plus, I work at a gas station - if someone says "Fillup on pump 6" and hands me a card, if I don't verify ID first, we can eat a lot of money. Say he pumps $75.00 worth of gas and THEN I find out that it's his wife's card... Bad news.

I verify that the sig on the card matches the laminated sig on the ID. If it's an older license without an imprinted signature, I just match the names and the picture on the ID with the face in-person.

At my old store our system pretty easily let us cancel a credit card transaction although it was not something we liked to do.

My favourites were husbands/boyfriends using their wives/girlfriends cards or vice-versa. Sorry if your name is not on the card then no product for you.

A couple of customers actually vowed never to shop with us again because we refused to allow them to use someone else's card (albeit a well known to them someone else but still not allowed) to make a purchase.

My roomate got married two years ago and still hasn't changed her name as she refuses to do so. She's one of those independent, quasi-feminist type of gal.

There's also the fact that since she moved to Washington she hasn't changed her ID from the ones issued in California...

Its always a pain in the ass when she goes in to make a payment for her husband or get things straightened out. People look at her funny, stare at her ID and go "But this account is in Mr. Dowell's and the only other person that can make payments is Mrs. Dowell. You're Simpson."

'but I *AM* Mrs. Dowell as I am Mr. Dowell's wife!" is always a phrase that confuses the poor chap dealing with the issue.
