  • as is means as is

At my Wm we had several TVs all reduced to, 50% off the marked price. These were floor models. <We checked that they worked> and we did not have all the accessories fo these things. We had a sign by the TVs saying that they were "as is", meaning that it was only what was there, and nothing else. For example if you purchased a TV that didn't have a remote with that TV, then you don't get a remote. Got it? Well here's a fun little exchange.

    AIL=As Is Lady
    EW=Electronics worker
    AIL:What does as is mean?
EW: Well, it means that you only get what is out here on the table with your TV. If it doesn't have a remote, then you don't get a remote, or if it doesn't have A/v wires you would not get them.
AIL: <Goes to TV w/o a remote> Does this come with a remote.
EW: Checks TV , um no it doesn't.
AIL: Well, can I get a remote?
Ew: No, sorry the TV is as is....
AIL: I UNDERSTAND THAT MORON, can I get a remote.
EW: No, if the TV doesn't have the remote here you cannot get the remote.
AIL: SHUT UP, ALL I WANNA KNOW IS CAN I GET A REMOTE??????
    EW: No.
AIL: WHAT DOES AS IS MEAN?
EW:<flustered> It means that you get only what is out here.
AIL: CAN I GET A REMOTE????????????
    EW: No, you cannot.
AIL: SHUT UP IDIOT CAN I GET A REMOTE????
EW: ma'am let me get a manager to help you.
    AIL: YOU ARE AN IDIOT...

To top all this off she complained to our managerthat EW was arrogant, and told her she could get the remote.

The manager knew the EW wouldn't have said that but he told AIL he said he talk to EW.

Now the next day a CSM rang upa customer and she gave them 50% percent off of the scanned price, remember waaaay back at the top where I said that it was 50% off the tag/marked price. The CSM, rang it for 50% off the scanned price and then said that we could give them a warranty.(Apparantly SCs aren't the only one who don't understand "As Is"

I work at a thrift store and we have taken to having customers fill out "as is" forms so that they know they are getting when they purchase the itiem...alot of times we have no way of testing the itiem ..such as a washer or dryer..we can plug it up that's about it so we'll sell it dirt cheap like 10.00 so they amy or may not get a steal...and t.v's are the same to..they'll ask is there a remote..uh no there isn't this is what they donated and then get all irate cause there isn't a remote uh hello you're in a damn thrift store!

Too bad the customer couldn't have shut up long enough for someone to suggest a universal remote.

I dunno about this one. I see a bit of suck on both sides of this. To me, the question "Can I get a remote?" means the customer is asking if there is anyway to procure a remote. She wasn't persistantly repeating that she expected one for free, she was simply asking if there was a way to get one. The worker instead of going back and forth with her repeating the same thing over and over and over again could have suggested a universal remote (BONUS - extra sale) or directed the customer to the manufacturer to purchase a replacement.

Part of customer service is being able to offer other options as a solution to a problem a customer has with what they are being offered.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

I should have mentioned this orginally, sorry.. EW offered the universal , but she wanted the universal remote for free, and she wanted us to program the code for the TV into the remote, for free and she wanted battaries for free, (an 8-pack). I'll have to remember the manufacturer though, that's a good suggestion.

There are several online stores that carry replacement manufacturer remotes. That's what I did when my mom wanted an extra remote for her television (in case she lost the one that came w/the tv.)

Next time you have a customer asking about remotes, you could run offer that option.

And still the customer insisted on being a jackass, calling the salesperson an idiot, and screaming at the top of her lungs.

No suck on the salesperson's part at all. Too bad giving her the old GTFO wasn't an option.

I don't think the salesperson was sucky--the SC was just being sucky.

And yes, I usually do check out the as-is stuff. Several months ago, I wanted a small cabinet to put some of my 1/18 scale models into. I did the usual go to IKEA, pick out what I wanted...and then went to the as-is area. Imagine my surprise when I found the *exact* same cabinet in there! There was nothing wrong with it, other than it was missing the (damaged) box, and the two little rubber thingies that go inside the doors. At 50% off, I was freaking ecstatic

Of course the difference between me and the SC, is that I didn't go screaming about an even bigger discount

But, were the universal remote and 8 pack of batteries being sold as is also?

The second she called you a moron you should have gotten a manager, I have refused to help someone for less than that. Calling you names is NOT ok, not acceptable and down right disgusting.

This would have been a great opportunity to sell the lady a universal remote.

At the point where the person started calling names or swearing, I would calmly tell them that I don't have to put up with that. They have the option at that point of leaving the store with some of their dignity intact, or being dragged out of the store by the local police department with charges of disorderly conduct being filed. Their choice, delivered with an evil smile.

Hard to sell to a raving gimme pig.

Frankly, I don't buy as is unless it's darn good savings, yet I'll buy "open box." I figure with open box, it's been checked to make sure everything's there + it works properly. As is, there might be unknown damage or I might find out later that I didn't really understand how the damage affected the item's operation. Sometimes I'm really slow on the uptake.
