  • He called his MOM

One afternoon a 16 or 17 year old guy came up to my till with an Xbox 360. I'm thinking, "No prob. This should be relatively easy." Boy...I couldn't have BEEN more wrong.

Me: "Hi, how are you? Did you find everything you were looking for today?"
Him: "Uh...yeah. But, like...I don't actually have the money to pay for this."
Me: (thinking "WTF? Why are you here then?") "Ok...so how can I help you today?"
Him: "Well, my grandfather's coming up to pay for this."
Me: (thinking the guy was close or right outside or en route and wondering why he couldn't wait for the grandfather to show up to pay) "Ok...well we can wait a few minutes. That shouldn't be a problem."
Him: "Well, no. See, he's coming in from out of town."
Me: (Me going back to my original "WTF?" thought) "Ok.."
Him: "Can you hold it for me?"
Me: "No, sir. I'm sorry. We cannot hold items here at the registers."
Him: "Oh. Ok." (Me thinking that would be it...but NO!) "Let me call my mom. Hang on."
Me: (thinking "...WTF is your MOM gonna do? She can't change store policy!")
Him: (into the phone) "Hey, Mom! I'm at BBuy. I'm at the register. The cashier is saying that she can't hold it here at the register." (pause) "My mom wants to talk to you."
Me: "Huh? ....Ok" (the things we do for customer-centric policies) "How may I help you ma'me?"
Her: "Hello. I'm Justin's mother (gee, never would have guessed). Why can't you hold it?"
Me: "It's against store policy, ma'me."
Her: "WELL I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE BIG DEAL IS! MY SON HAS TO GO PLAY BASEBALL IN A FEW MINUTES (well then why the HELL is he at my store?) AND MY FATHER IS GONNA COME AND BUY THAT GAME."
Me: "Well ma'me, I'm sorry but we don--"
Her: "HOW IS MY FATHER GONNA KNOW WHAT MY KIDS WANT IF IT'S NOT UP THERE AT THE REGISTER?" (Gee, I dunno....you could TALK to him about it...or WRITE IT DOWN...or even *gasp* COME UP AND GET IT TOGETHER!) "MY FATHER DOESN'T KNOW WHAT MY KIDS WANT!"

By this time the MOD got wind of what was going on and told me to go on ahead and hold the item. See what endless bitching can get you?

The kicker about all this is that after that entire diatribe THE FKKERS DIDN'T SHOW UP TO GET THE DAMN XBOX!

So Gramps didn't know what he was buying?
He probably would have seen the price tag and backed off anyway.

I get that crap sometimes, and its always some kid that thinks mommy or daddy can fix it over the phone.

"Dad, this guy says he needs your credit card and something about how I'm not old enough to stay at the hotel". Yea, because all hotels allow 16 year olds to get a room using a parents credit card, thats how it works.

And no good deed goes unpunished, you held an item that you weren't supposed to to hold and no one claimed it, sounds typical really.

You break policy to hold it for an irate customer and 6 other customers will want to buy it. You don't sell it to them b/c you promised the hold, you piss off 6 other paying customers - and the person you held the item for never comes in for it.

          Always.

          No I'm not bitter.
If you are thinking to yourself, "Hmmm, should I post this?" it should probably go HERE.

i had a similar thing happen to me when i was working at the halloween store this last year.

over a pair of go go boots
please note that i did not work at the counter but at the costume dressing room.

            me= me
svg= spoiled valley girl (like i thought like valley talk like went out with the like 80's)
            with a later apearence by
            m= manger
            fn= forgetful nurse

anyway... she sees said boots and tries them on, they are the last of her size in the store and the other stores in the county are also out.

svg: like oh my god these are like the cutest boots ever i want to buy them. but i like dont have daddys credit card right now can you like hold them.
me: nope sorry i cant hold them for you
svg: but like you just have too, my halloween is like gonna be ruined if you dont like let me have these boots right now.
me: im sorry i cant hold anything
svg: but you like just have too, i sware i like live down the street and i need to like get daddys credit card.
me: im sorry i cant hold anything, if you want to buy these boots, you are going to have to hurry, cause we are closeing in 30 mins.
svg: like what ever (explitive deleted)

m: was that girl like serious (who had been watching the whole thing going down and probably giggling her butt off.
            me: apparently she was.

mean while fn comes in and sees the boots not more than 3 seconds after svg cusses me out.
fn: wow these boots would be perfect for my costume, and they are comfortable too, aw crap i forgot my check book, will you hold them for me.
m: sure no problem, anything to keep that spoiled brat from getting them just hurry cause we are going to close.

fn runs out and gets check book, mean while the boots had been moved to the front of the store where the check out is and hidden really well

            svg comes back

svg: like where are my boots,
me: im sorry some one came in right after you and bought them,
svg: well like you just like have to get more in.
me: im sorry i have no control over what comes in on the trucks, but if you leave your name and # at the front check out we can give you a call if they come in.
            svg: like whatever.

i look at the front of the store and fn is talking to the manager and buying boots as we speak i feel alittle bit mean but like oh my god that girl was just horrid.

btw i toned down the likes, i didnt feel like typeing them all out and i am not kidding it was like every other word.

Managers love hanging their employees out to dry. That's called customer service.

Again, the rule of customer service is that you make one happy while in the process pissing off many more, the more you piss off, the better your customer service.

My supervisor expects me to go out and talk to every customer. OK, so when I have a line of phones and all the customers are starting at me, you want me to piss off all the others just so ONE is happy?

I"ll admit I've called my mom from stores before... but not at the checkout...... I usually want to ask her opinion about the price of something or if she knows of somewhere I could get it cheaper, etc...... or if she thinks it's a good buy.... I just like to get a second opinion and I'm usually shopping alone. If someone couldn't hold something though, I'd just buy it, THEN get her opinion, and if we decided it wasn't such a great purchase, take it back.... (with receipt and unworn, unused). The kid w/ the XBOX thing was crazy though - couldn't they tell Grandpa "XBOX" and then tell him to ask someone in the store to help him? I'm pretty sure everyone that works at the Best Buy would know what an XBOX is........ you shouldn't have to hold his hand and walk him to the register and have what he needs to purchase magically "appear"........ w/out his even telling you what it was......

I've learned from experience that no good can come from a customer handing you his cell phone.

I get this now and then when Mom and Dad are paying for their kid's new stereo system installation, and when the vehicle shows up, it turns out that there's an extra cost required for something unforeseen. First I have to explain it to the kid, then I have to explain it to Mom.

Other times, I've finished the installation, and the kid tells me I need to talk to mommy so she can give me the credit card number for payment. Since we won't under any circumstances take credit card payment over the phone, that's not going to end well. And Junior isn't driving his car away without paying, so Mom's going to have to drop what she's doing and come to the store to pay. That means I get to hear it from her twice.

I think the only time I had my mother aid me with a purchase was when I picked up my laptop and didn't have enough cash on me and she didn't want me to run off to the ATM a few blocks down. So she paid half and I paid her back later. ^_^

Interestingly, I read an article not too long ago that our society was raising an entire generation of complete and total wussies. Heres' evidence to support that.

If you scream and yell loud enough, you get your way!

I know plenty of people though that have been there and have had an SC try shoving their cellular phone in their face to speak to someone else. Many flat out refuse to do it. If they're not at the store, I cannot help them.

I sometimes do that if my mom sends me over to the mall to pick up something for her boss, just to double-check. The difference seems to be that I do it while in the aisle with the product so if I have the wrong one it can just be put back on the shelf. I'd never think of getting the cashier involved (another difference, I have a brain).

The only time I had to call my parents in that sort of situation was when my car was getting its breaks replaced. I was down at college and I didn't have enough money on my debit cards since I hadn't gotten my first paycheck from work just yet and wasn't expecting the repairs to cost so much. I was expecting a simple break pad replacement, but there ended up being a lot more problems with the car. So I had to call my dad and have Pep Boys put the repair costs on his credit card. I felt pretty silly through the whole thing.

Calling a parent with because you need to bum some money or you need a lift or whatever is not the same thing at all as calling your mommy because the mean clerk won't let him have his way. Needing your old man's credit card, while maybe making you feel a little silly, is NOT the same as having your mommy yell at someone on your behalf for not giving her widdle pwecious what he wants just because.
