i had a guy in to buy tires the other day, who complained that his tires cost 26$ now for anyone who has bought tires recently or even not so recently you would know that that is one inexpensive tire.

i told him that these were the least expensive tires that i had in the whole shop and that he would have trouble finding tires that are in that price range anywhere else. of course he saw on my compter screen that there were some for 15$ but of course i didnt have them in stock and they were probably discontinued.

hes upset because its hard to find his size tire anywhere, they are on 13 inch rims so they are pretty much getting phased out for larger more efficiant tire sizes. i have 2 companys that make tires that small and they are slowly stopping sending me those particular tires because no one has them any more.

he then tells me he keeps this particular car just so he can buy cheap tires. im sorry but tires are important, as much so as the brakes that if you dont have at least decent tires then whats the point.

its just as annoying as some one who comes in who buys these big rims for their car and then when they go to buy tires for it they cry that their tires are 150-300$ per tire plus a special mounting fee. if you couldnt afford the tires in the future why did you spend the money to buy such expensive rims in the first place, just so they would look good,

please people be smart about your purchases of tires and other related items, if you dont think you can keep it up then dont buy it, and if you just have to have it make sure you buy the insurance so that if you do have a tread puncture that you cant repair you will at least recoup some of the cost of that really really expensive tire,

Maybe you should give him those tires from China that keep exploding on the highway... at least I think that was the story I saw in the news.... China sent us a whole bunch of really crappy tires and they were having to re-call all of them... I bet they'd be cheap now! (and of course dangerous and highly inefficient - but hey, he cared about price, not safety, right?)

Geez, I think this is the template they use for a news story every other monday:

"China sent us a whole bunch of really crappy(insert product of the week) and they were having to re-call all of them."

Now there's a sentence that has, and will be getting, some serious mileage in the future.

What the heck was he putting tires on that he could buy a tire for 26 bucks? A kid's trike? I'm kind of shocked.

Me too. The saying "You get what you pay for" applies especially to tires. $26 tires to me sound like something you'll be replacing in less than a year. You want a tire that wears good, gives a good ride, has good tread and traction, you're going to pay for it. Sometimes you find a good deal, but not often. I needed tires for my Ranger, and the local Wal-Mart (gasp) had Goodyear Wranglers for $55 a tire. Compared to $70+ per tire other places wanted for light truck tires, this was a steal. I've had these tires now for over a year, they still have 3/4ths of the tread on them, and are wearing nice and even. I have no complaints. I forsee getting another year out of them at least, maybe two.

Holy buttered corncobs, 26 bucks a tire is cheap as hell. I just had to put new tires on the towncar and it set me back close to 500 bucks. We have a family friend who owns a tire and repair shop and gets us a decent deal. We know we can trust him so we take his word as gold.

About the expensive tire due to rim size. We used to have a friend who had a lifted F150 (about a 7 inch suspension and 4 inch body lift, or there abouts) and had I think 35 inch tires on it. Each tire was 1,500 bucks (yeah that really is a comma in there). He couldn't even afford to keep a spare tire, not that he had anyplace on the truck for a tire that stupidly large anyways.

VERY inexpensive. I haven't seen tire prices that low since...I happened to see the prices for replacement wheelbarrow wheels.

Maybe he's driving a Geo Metro. I remember when my Mommy still had hers...it was such a pain trying to find tires small enough for it.

If he wants cheap 13" tires, he should shop the boneyards. I did that in my youth. Easy way to afford tires as long as you don't mind having four different tires and a slightly funny ride.

Of course nowadays I only drive Subarus, so replacing tires means all four at once with the same tread pattern and wear amount, so I just buy new.

Ugh. I've had cars with 13" rims, and it wasn't always easy getting replacement tires 10 years ago. If they're phasing them out, then I'm glad I don't have to deal with that any longer.

The last time I had to replace a tire, it cost me about $37 for everything, including mounting and balancing and all that. The only thing they didn't do was actually put it on my car. Of course, that was about 5 years ago, too.

The cheapest tires that I had bought, was for just around $300 for all for. I do not trust Walmart for anything on my car.

When I still had the Tercel, I had no problem getting tires...even for the little 13" rims on it. Of course I didn't have to do that often--the car was so light that the tires took forever to wear out

Compare that with the Mazda. At the time, the Protege ES (the DX and LX then used narrow tires with a slight-taller sidewall) was the only car to use the 195/55/R15 size...which meant that they were hard to find and expensive. Then the Hyundai Tiberon and a few other "sporty" cars started using that size. Then I had no problems getting them. Not cheap either--Michelins were about $800 installed but some made by BF Goodrich were *much* less, about $400 total!

What the hell? First, Chinese manufactured dogfood killed pets, then chinese manufactured toothpaste is poison, and now their tires are exploding on the road?Oh, and I can't forget a recent recall we had for Thomas the tank engine. The Chinese manufacturers used lead based paint on children's toys.

Thanks a whole lot, you greedy corporations. You too Bill Clinton(I think it was Bill Clinton), for opening trade with China.

it was a toyota trecel, from the mid 90's i think. i think the size was 195 65 13 s i cant remember,

the price didnt include monting and balanceing, it was just the tire right off.

what makes me laugh is people who think they can install the tires them selfs on rims, yah ill just take these home and pry those tires off and put them back on with no problem (as i get a giggle inside) i take them out to the shop, point see that machine do you have one or one of the old classic ones, then you will not be putting the tires on by your self. (i get espcially giggly when they are buying low profile tires which need a special machine since they are so tight and hard sidewalled.

Damn, I spent like 350 a few months ago for 3 tires (I had an unfixable flat a few months before that and had to replace one). And they aren't even the same kind that came with the car, which I couldn't afford! (And I drive an Elantra...hardly a high-end vehicle...)

yah i bought 2 tires and then 2 again cause i couldnt afford it at the time, i could have gotten off cheaper but i didnt want the low low end tire, i settled for middle of the road. add in the road hazard and it was total about 400$ for all 4. 2 i was able to buy with my store discount which of course is only 10% off and not off of labor.

i miss my little bug but then again i would have to speical order the tires for it now and that would have been a total bummer.
