  • Insurance Claims Jobs

Ok, maybe some of you out there can help me out with this. I've finally reached the breaking point with retail and have decided to look for something else. I found this one position with a large insurance company working in claims. I'd be investigating the validity of customers' claims and then making decisions about whether or not to approve/deny the claim.

I have a gut feeling that I would like this job better than the one I have now--it's roughly the same pay (I actually make a little bit more in my current job, but it's not enough to make it worth staying), has regular M-F hours, and I would finally get to escape working in the store and dealing with all the run-of-the-mill jackasses who can just come in off the street.

I also have a feeling that I could be dealing with a whole new level of suckitude. It's insurance claims--I'm going to spend my days working with some pissed off customers who have just had a REALLY bad day, and I think part of the job entails telling these people, "Sorry, but you're not covered."

Anyone out there work this kind of job or have any opinions/advice about what I may be getting myself into?

Yep, not to mention the people who are trying to claim fraud...

Why be so defensive? It's not like you would be attacking their integrity or anything... :rolls eyes:

You don't really say what claims job it is. Is it adjusting, where you go out and write a report, but don't actually have to have too much contact with these people, or is a claims handling/administration job where you get the reports and then get to talk to these people and argue with them day in and day out. I do work in insurance, but I haven't done front line claims, I'm just the one who sits in the corner and cuts the checks, I speak with NO ONE.

Either way, it can be stressful, and you will definately have some sucky claimants, but overall, it's the management and the company that will make the difference in how bad it is.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

I belive it's going to be handling/administration because I one of the questions I asked was if there was any field work involved (thinking of those Progressive SUVs out on the roads). But, I was told there was no field work involved, which leads me believe it won't involve any assessments outside the office. Sorry for the unclarity though--I've only read the job description online and had my few basic questions answered this morning!

Didn't the dad in The Incredibles work in a claims department?

Um, yeah. I have nothing else.

Yep, he did. And I think his soul-sucking boss got angry when he tried to help an old lady navigate the claims rules to get better coverage.

I had a friend who did insurance claims for a while. Take a quick look at Consumer Reports-- the insurance issue (your library probably has it) with the reader feedback on their companies.

If the company you're applying for is in the upper quarter of the list, the job is probably better than retail. Though not a by a whole lot.

If the company is in the bottom half, you're talking about suckitude on the order of telemarketing.

Bottom fifth, worse than telemarketing. Soul-wrecking-type worse.
