    I hate these diets. It brings out the asshole in people I've found. At least where I worked. Each one of these Atkins-sheep had an opinion on something, that they had to cram down my throat. Most of them were "Don't you know that carbs are bad for you?" Yes, some are. But by not eating carbs you lose the ability to fertilize, your blood stops clotting. OH NO!!!!
    But none of them have ever taken a Chemistry class, or actually looked up what these "evil" compounds do. These people are WASP 2.0. They are right, and I'm not because I'm working in a fast food joint.
    Which brings up my next point, WE'RE A FAST FOOD JOINT!!!! Nothing we have is healthy. You getting a Double burger, with extra everything, and no bun, isn't gonna make your ass any smaller. May I suggest the gym, right across the street? But that's too far to walk for you isn't it?
    My favorite example would be the guy that said "Oh they still make the Triple. No wonder the U.S. is fat." And proceeds to order a double, with extra cheese and mayo, with no bun. Yes, because bread is evil.

    This is hear/say, there may/may not be any truth to it, but I was told by an anti-Atkins lady at the grocery store that depriving your body of carbohydrates inhibits you from thinking as well as you could.

    She was so adorable. The person in front of her had bought out nearly our entire stock of Atkins products, and she was decent enough not to say anything in front of the person and embarrass them, but after they left, she said "I can't stand these Atkins crazies. Don't they know that eliminating carbs from their diet does much more harm than good?!"

      I'm on low carb, but not by choice, I'm diabetic, and carbs can mess with my blood sugar, but I can have some, and believe me, I use all my "credits". Given the choice, I'd take pasta or bread for dinner over meat any day of the week. Unless asked, I would never advise another adult on what to eat.
      I'm not on Atkins, though, and I actually think that Atkins is dangerous. Bad things can happen when you don't get enough carbs, and I don't see any point to a burger without a bun but I would never lecture someone about it.
      I'll never understand why people feel the need to force others to join them in their beliefs, whether it's a diet or religion.

      I've read the same thing about carbs feeding the brain too.

        I'm on a low-carb diet too, also due to blood sugar issues.

        I would never eat a burger without the bun. If I'm going to do fast food, I've already made the decision to throw nutrition to the wind for that one meal. Go big or go home!

          I don't like diets unless they are based around what would be dangerous for a person to eat. I don't think any of the restrictive ones that cut out a certain type of food are particularly healthy since humans developed as mostly omnivorous.

          The only "diet" that I've ever thought was even remotely reaonsable, and that meshes with everything I've ever thought or read (that wasn't propoganda or based on faulty studies) is the one that's gaining popularity right now. The basic idea is that "processing food is bad." The closer to natural the food you eat is, the healthier it is for you.

          Our bodies have developed to make the best use of food in it's natural state over many millenia. Changing the state of the food we eat in the last several centuries has resulted in dietary imbalances, tooth decay, and cancer. (tooth decay and cancer are modern problems. they don't exist until you start eating processed/industrialized diets)

            The GI diet is another good one- based on wholegrains, fresh fruit and veg and other good stuff.

            No carb- well, as you do need carbs to give you energy, keep your digestion healthy and for pretty much EVERY essential body function- however it is better for your health to swap to the less refined versions.

              Psst - not quite true. Cancer is, to be overly blunt about it, a matter of numbers. Occasionally, something will go wrong with some cells and the tumour develops. Some things can increase the risk of cancer, and many of these are in the modern era (and not just in the diet), but it's more that people are living longer and therefore more of us are hitting the unfortunate number. We're also better able to diagnose what's going on, and whereas many maladies once could have been marked down as 'the lurgy' or 'the palsy', then now we can actually work out what they are.

              Back in the Middle Ages, it's know that there were people who extracted teeth at fairs, hiring a drummer to drown out the screams of their patients. lack of painkiller, see. I once - before I gave up television - saw a report on the underwater archaeology used to raise the Marie Rose (Henry the 8th's flagship). They recovered skulls from the sailors who drowned, and they pointed out at the time that several were suffering from tooth decay.

                I don't know about tooth decay, but some very famous people from pre-modern times have died of cancer, including Napoleon and Queen Mary I. The term cancer was actually coined by Hippocrates, the famous doctor of ancient Greece.

                More people are getting cancer today than ever before because we are now living long enough to get it. The average cancer patient is in their 70's.

                I agree with you to some extent about avoiding processed foods, though, if only because it would naturally force people to eat more fruits and vegetables and less fast food.

                  -insert nutrition class here- You can not burn fat without carbs nor can you burn carbs with out fat.
                  Complex carbs are better yes than simple carbs.

                  Personally?
                  Id rather eat a steak sandwich on wheat than a 12 oz rib eye.
                  And i love carrots.

                      Here's some diet advice my wife and I liked, if you put a crouton on top of a sundae instead of a cherry, it counts as a salad. LOL!

                      My doctor put me on the Sugar Busters diet because he diagnosed me with hyperlipidemia. Other than switching over to diet sodas or putting Splenda or another artificial sweetener in my coffee or tea, I'm not making the greatest effort to follow it. Well, I do tend to eat whole grain breads, pastas, and rice rather than processed versions of the same. I do put a little more effort into portion control, now, too.

                          There's a rather popular conspiracy theory that Napoleon was poisoned (they found high levels of arsenic in his hair. The question is: how did it get there?)

                              I believe it...your brain itself runs on glucose...glucose comes most readily from sugars and starches, ie, carbs...eating a lot of protein and fat and little carbs means your body has to do more work to convert it all to glucose for your brain to use.
