  • Apparantly I'm Dumb

It was very busy today, the majority of service staff were off sick with the flu and they were very sick it's the worst flu epidemic in years and if my staff are ill i don't want them working.

Anyway i was supposed to finish my shift at 3pm, i'm serving in the express checkout when i hear this screaching voice "Is anyone serving smokes here?", I turn around and it's R a regular of ours who is incredibly annoying and rude, but i do feel sorry for her because she has cancer and has been fighting it for years.

I finish serving my customer and go over to R, she tells me what she wants and normally one brand of smokes she gets is kept in the cupboard so i open it to look for them.

R "No no there they are ( randomly pointing her finger at the shelf) I didn't see them right away.

R "THERE THEY ARE YOU DUMB DUMB" ( What are we in kindergarten or something)

Me "R Don't you call me dumb"
R " WELL YOU ARE, YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE DOING!"

ME "Since i don't know what i'm doing, i suddenly don't know how to work this register, so it looks like you're out of luck with those smokes, bye now"

R " You have to serve me, i'm a very sick woman and i need my smokes"( Where's the logic in that statement?)

Me "We have the right to refuse service and because you have insulted me you can get your smokes elsewhere, goodbye"

And with that i walked away, told my coworkers i was clocking off and going home and left R standing there with her mouth open before she gave up and left.

She really has some disgusting habits, if she has an ingrown toenail she'll tell me all about it and then remove her shoe and put her foot on the counter to show me the pus filled infected toe

I have to do it all over again tomorrow

This woman has cancer and she's SMOKING???

    Who's the dum-dum here?

No need to feel sorry for her. Her cancer is the result of her own actions.

"Fighting it for years?" With what? Does she brandish the lit end of the cig at the cancer to try to fend it off with fire?

See, she's planning on smoking so much that she'll give her cancer cancer so it will die before she does.

        What an @$$hole.

Just like a guy we had in my old store demanding we do whatever we can for him because he has either AIDS or cancer. His story changed weekly.

It's Sucky Customer Logic, which says, "I am the Center Of The Universe, and all of you customer service peons must bow down and do exactly what I say when I say, even if it makes no sense whatsoever, because I am the Customer and I am ALWAYS RIGHT, even if I'm completely wrong. If you do not, I have the almighty right to call you names, question your intelligence/ancestry/personal habits and treat you like the dirt you are."

Still, sheesh, calling you a "dum-dum" (is that the best she could come up with? Pathetic!) because you couldn't find her cigarettes instantly? All those packs start to look alike after a while. And there's only a few hundred different brands/types/lengths/variations out there, give us a moment or two!

Can you tell I used to sell cigarettes, and am very glad I no longer do?
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

            Dum-dums? Ooh, lollipops!

I have an ex whose mother had cancer (breast) and smoked right up until the last time she went in the hospital (from a stroke). She just couldn't quit. But she wasn't a bitch.

That's a rather callous and somewhat misinformed statement.

Cancer is almost never the person's fault.

While smoking can increase the risk of cancer, it doesn't cause it.

My boss has three types of cancer (one is lungs), and not only does he not smoke, but he's vehemently anti-smoking and has never really been exposed to second-hand smoke either. My mother and aunt have smoked since they were teenagers and are still completely cancer-free.

Several people have actually gotten lung cancer and mesothelioma from asbestos in older buildings over the years. It took that long to discover that these buildings contained cancer causing chemicals/spores/etc!

I can flat out admit that if I got lung cancer, I wouldn't stop smoking. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't. I'm a smoker until the day I die. I guess I'm a dumb dumb too...but at least I'd be a friendly and non demanding dumb dumb!

That's an erroneous statement (not to get on the smoking/non-smoking bandwagon, just clearing up a small misconception).

IN people who are predisposed to cancer (who easily produce Free Radicals), yes, smoking can CAUSE a free radical spurt that in turn, becomes a cancerous tumor. So yes, in certain cases, smoking can CAUSE cancer. (thanks to auntie Cancer ward nurse).

Bloke I used to know had to visit his sister in a hospice, and he told me about someone in the next room he saw who was dying of lung cancer. She was estimated to have only a few weeks left.

"Stupid!" he said, flinging his arms around.

"Um, they can't do any more harm now," I pointed out, at which point he calmed down.

I have never smoked, but I've been told it is one of the hardest things to quit. My parents had a very nice couple as their next-door neighbors. Both smoked heavily. First he died from lung cancer, then she had a cancerous lung removed, then she died also. Both smoked until the very end of their lives. I think they would've quit if they could, I can't judge them because I've not been in their position.

Maybe this old woman in the original post has tried to quit but just can't. However it's still no excuse for her being such an obnoxious old SC.

Personally if I ever got cancer or anything else that was gonna kill me in X amount of months, I'm gonna do everything I can. Smoke, drink, skydive, barrel over Niagara, Everest. Doesn't matter, if I'm going out, I'm going out in style. I want the Headlines to say "Cancer Victim Dies on Safari from Wild Tiger" Call me selfish, but I think that as long as I'm alive, and you're giving me a deadline (No pun intended) then I'm doing every crazy thing possible. Also, because it would be something I would do, the last Waitress/Waiter that serves me gets whatevers left of my Will, that I haven't blown, if I'm not married or have any kids. I wanna be another crazy millionaire, with all the money in the world, and nothing to spend it on. I just wouldn't be an asshole to anyone in the process. If I'm going down, I'm going down alone.

You know, I have to say this. You guys with the cavalier attitude that "well, I have to die of something, might as well be from smoking." or "If I'm dying, I'm going to go out with a bang, gonna live it up, etc etc."

Naw. No you aren't. Come down with cancer or empysema and you won't be doing much other than lying in bed suffering, wishing things were different, bargaining on your deathbed.

I've heard it, and then I've seen it. Several times, in fact. It's always the fucking same, too, and always ends with a funeral that could have been avoided, at least for a while.

Some of you might have this nice, noble little fantasy about how it's going to be when your lungs start dying, and I'm here to tell you, I can promise you it won't be anything like you think.

Serious raw spot with me. Maybe I need to just go play on another thread. Meet you all somewhere it's a little less volatile for me. Later.

As I mentioned, my boss has lung cancer, among other things. He's never smoked or been near smokers and badmouths smoking every chance he gets. (yeah, that's a bit of irony for you)

The only time he's slowed down at all is when the treatment he's currently under makes him feel bad.

One of the health newsletters he gets had an article in it about people who make it to old age.

The only thing any of them had in common was that none of them had high blood sugar. Some smoked, some didn't, some were overweight, some were underweight, some were fit, but the only thing that was a guaranteed killer was high blood sugar.
