I was at another till and this happened to my coworker, N. A lady had come up with some ON SALE items and insisted they were an extra 25 percent off.
Now, that day we had this ad printed. This is the EXACT wording:
25 % off when you use your Sears Card or Sears Mastercard
OR
20 Percent off
already-reduced clearance items in ladies/mens/children's fashions.
She insisted that the ad meant you can use your sears card and get 25 percent off ANYthing in the store and she believed neither N nor me.
She put her hand over the bottom half "See? If you take just THAT part it says I get this!"
I said "But you are taking it out of context! Its the entire sentence you have to look at!"
I went back to my customers soon after, and she walked off in a huff a few minutes later. N said that she changed her mind about the things.
I guess the ad IS a little poorly written, but by her logic I could go up to a 'buy one, get one free' at a car dealership (never will happen, but let's pretend), cover up the first two words and get a car for free.
