  • Its an elevator!

Over the summer, I've taken a second job at a semi-local tourist attraction. I work in the restaurant and do cooking/cash/service.

The site that we are at consists of a number of freestanding buildings, and our building contains the washrooms. This is indicated on the door.

To get to said washroom, you have to go through another door and down a short hallway. However, directly across from the entrance door is an elevator. This is one of those elevators that is better categorized as a service lift. Its got an almost regular door on it and requires a key to open, as well as has a button beside it to call the car. In other words, it doesn't look like a regular door.

Guess how many people think that it is the door to the washroom. Go on, guess.
    ...
At least one or two per day.

Now, we have tried to deal with this. It originally had a sign on it, with The washroom symbol, a hand pointing to the right, and "Washrooms are to your right" in both official languages. (This is a Parks Canada run site).

    This didn't work.

We figured that people were seeing the sign and ignoring the hand. So, we moved it off to a post to the right of the elevator.

Helped a little bit, but still getting a few people, so put a sign on the elevator saying "Elevator."

Still didn't work. Although it is better.

The worst is that the latest person who did it spoke English with either no discernable accent or a British accent (I don't quite remember). So, it's not a language issue.

I just don't know what to do anymore. I'm shaking my head at this whole thing.

Well, in some societies and elevator is a bathroom. Like in the Apartment complex I used to live at. So if they came from the same place where the other apartment-dwellers came from, Moronia, I can understand the confusion. At least no one has used the elevator as the bathroom, be thankful for that.
It is inaccurate to say that I hate everything. I am strongly in favor of common sense, common honesty, and common decency. This makes me forever ineligible for public office.

The facilities crew in my building is constantly cleaning the elevators in the parking garage. It seems that, even though the theaters and the restaurant both have restrooms, the elevators also see their fair share.

Maybe some people had an unexpected accident.

        Others are just lazy.

        More are jerks.

Some, perhaps, just don't know any better, or are in the stages of being potty trained.
