  • Iam calling American Express on you

Our return policy is 30 days with a receipt to get the form of tender back that you used. No receipt or after 30 days is a store credit.

A man walks up to the service desk with some luggage he wants to return.

SC - Hi I want to return this luggage.

Me - OK do you have a receipt?

    SC - No.

Me - Without a receipt I can only give you a store credit.

SC - But I have my American Express statement showing that I purchased these items here and I want it back on my card.

Me - I am sorry sir but I can't put it back on your card without a reciept. Your credit statement only shows that you made a purchase here but it does not show what the itmes are and I can't use that for a return.

SC - Can you look it up on your system?

Me - I am sorry sir but our system does not work like that. I am not able to look up transactions with credit cards.

SC - I work with computers and I know that you can look it up!

Me - I am sorry again sir but our system is not the sophisticated. I will need your receipt.

SC - I want to talk to your manager!

Me - I am the manager on duty at the moment. I will be happy to return your luggage for the full price you paid but it will have to go on a store credit without a receipt.

SC - THIS IS FRAUD!! YOU ARE REFUSING TO GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK!! I AM CALLING AMERICAN EXPRESS AND TELL THEM YOU ARE REFUSING MY RETURN!!

Me - Sir I am not refusing your return. I can't put it back on your credit card without a receipt.

SC- I am calling American Express.

Me - Sir it does not matter what American Express says. This is our store policy and American Express has nothing to do with it.

SC - Help the next in line I am calling American Express right now.

He goes off to the side and calls American Express. Five minutes later he returns to the front and says nothing and picks up his luggage and walks out the store

He came back two days later WITH his RECEIPT and is as nice as can be and gets his credit back on his card.

Its stupid, that they think, that the Credit Card companies, are in charge of stores.

Why not just have brought the receipt in the first place?

I'm sure he thought that the store policy of needing a receipt DIDN'T apply to him - he's special! I love it when the customers think that the rules don't apply to them...that they can get whatever it is THEY want.

my favorite is when they have returns, and want cash back. Sorry, unless you PAID with cash, you don't get cash back. I've had them argue with me - our policy is a return with no receipt gets you one of two things - if you have a store charge, a credit to that, or a merch credit. That's it....i've had people want cash, want it put back on their visa, am ex, what have you. nope, no can do...

I get SO tired of no receipt return SC's that cop an attitude!

Sure, the ability to return a product is so common in retail, it may be easy for people to assume it is their right to do so. But, unless an item is defective, there are no laws dictating so. It's a courtesy the store extends to it's customers.

I, too, get the occasional "I don't have a receipt, but I have my CC statement" customer. Sometimes it's just an innocent assumption/ignorance on the customer's part, but there are those that are just total dicks when they find out it is not acceptable in lieu of a register receipt.

JLG, your policy is generous in that you can give a full refund on a store credit, with no receipt. Ours like many, require that we give the lowest sale price. Of course the suckiest will raise all kinds of hell about that too, many will react with anything from minor grumbling to moderate bitching, but not going so for as pushing the issue, asking for a manager, or giving the tired old "I've shopped here for 92 years, and spent $4,826,845.73 here!" On the other hand, there's the rare one that will say, "Hey, I don't have a receipt, but a store credit for whatever amount you can give me will be fine."

What many people don't realize, or care about, is without the receipt, we truly have no idea if they paid the price currently showing on the register. Maybe they forgot, or didn't realize the item was on sale. Maybe there was a general price increase between the time they bought, and the time they are returning. Technically the burden is on them.

I also detest the "But you can just look it up in your computer!" arguement. Even if we have the ability to do so. The thought may never even cross their mind to do so, but the next guy might be some scammer that will do a no receipt return, get a store credit, then will shoplift the same item, and return it with the receipt. It's not our job to determine which is which.

A common thought here on CS, is that everyone (especially SC's) should have to work retail for a day, week, month, year, the rest of their miserable existence, to see what it's like. My first choice in that thinking, would be to have the no receipt return customers work the return desk. Especially the nastiest of them!

And when I was in the store and I got one of these, they were much more likely to have gotten back the full price (assuming something small like a mass market paperback or something) rather than taking off the standard "no receipt" percentage that we usually did (to match what the website was selling it for).

And if I had one of those who told me they used their member card, they would get back the full (or current) price less 10% rather than the 20% or more that the website is usually selling for. Be honest and you usually make out better with me... (no not that way...well, unless you're hot...no, I'm not that kind of girl....)

That's being sensible, SC's don't believe in that. I'd be willing to bet that a great deal of returns are people who've suddenly worked out that they can't afford what they bought and need their money back or are trying out one scam or another.
