  • My mother, the SC

So, my mom and I are in a fairly large mall while I was a senior in high school. My dad had received a gift card at work for a place called Sunglass Hut and let my mom and I spend it because he didn't need anything from there. Now, if you know anything about this place, it's usually on of the small flea market style booths in the middle of the path that sells obscenely expensive sunglasses (for what they charge, I expect them to get satellite TV) as well as some more reasonably priced accessories. The one we visited was inside a mall department store. I had found a good, large, sturdy case that I wanted to keep my prescription glasses in because most other cases broke in my bookbag.

So, I ask the cashier if she could pull them from the case and my mom pulls out the gift card. The cashier apologizes and informs us that her booth does not have the correct equipment to run the card and she informs us that there is another Sunglass Hut in the mall that CAN redeem gift cards and gives us directions. I thank her, but my mom is visibly pissed and is grumbling as we walk away.

We enter the other store, but under our search, there was no cases at this location. That is when my mom goes into BERSERKER mode. She starts screaming at the girl at the register. People are staring and the girl (about my age) was TERRIFIED. Picture the deer-in-the-headlight stare resulting from one witnessing their own death, that was the girls expression.

Brief history of my mom: She is usually sick about 3 months a year, has a short temper and is usually very irritable. She is a self-proclaimed super bitch, hence how she did so well on city council, but I digress.

A little history on me: I'd worked for 2 years by this point at a gas station/car wash and had plenty of SCs. I was not about to let this slide.

My speech I screamed to my mom: "SHUT UP AND LEAVE THIS POOR GIRL ALONE, SHE IS JUST A CASHIER, SHE CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS! IT'S NOT HER FAULT THAT THE TWO STORES ARE DIFFERENT! IF YOU WANT TO BITCH SOMEBODY OUT, BITCH TO THE F***ING OWNER! LEAVE HER OUT OF IT!"

At this point, the glare that could turn one to stone is now pointed at me and I return it to my mom, she then storms out. I have NEVER sen a look of such relief as I had just witnessed on the cashier's face. I spend about a minute apologizing and then start a mad dash to get to the car before I got left (it would have been a 45 mile walk back home). I got to the car first and we drove home is total silence.

When we got home, my dad took my side, but scolded me for swearing.
This is like my expression when faced with a SC...

Way to take one for the team! Good for you!

(Would she really have left you there?)

Yay for standing up for the cashier. Also yay for making it to the car before she left you there. And a final Yay for your dad for siding with you. That's three Yays! HOORAH!!!

sounds like my future mother in law, she probably would have done the same thing,

shes almost always an sc. even with me, when they were buying tires from me and their card got declined (2 of them actually) which is strange since they have the money to cover that kind of thing. she sat there and yelled at me because of it, i warned my boss and my coworkers that she was an sc and that i would deal with her because i knew how to deal with her. they sat back and watched as i handled her the best way i could while dad stood back and just watched. after it was all over, they all said you wernt kidding about her. one of my coworkers had written a ticket up for them, and it ran out and even though i was mad cause i wouldnt get the commission i told him you do not want to deal with her she is a uberbitch. after that he said im so glad you took that ticket cause i know i would have freaked out.

i try to put her in her place, my fave was when i had the day off, so i could prepare to go to the rennisance faire in big bear cali. we go to home depot (ok i need stuff there) and the costco (yah needed stuff there) so she says lets go to ikea. my reply was i dont have time for this kind of crap, none of us need furniture and more so crappy furniture at that. you can go to the ikea im gonna go to the costco you can meet up with me later. i get high fives from my bf and his dad no one has ever stood up to her like that before.

dad likes to shop with me cause we dont take all day or look at stuff they dont need. she hates takeing me with them because of it. and when we do go shopping together she quizes me about my cooking for some reason.
