  • Greetings!

    Greetings to y'all.

First off, let me say thanks for having this site. I work in a small town cafe nestled deep within the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia, and this forum makes me realize that the customers I have to deal with really aren't all that bad.

Except for the people who ask for a latte and then get angry when I start to steam the milk. Apparently because it is hot outside, when someone asks for a drink that is normally served hot, I am supposed to be somehow aware that they actually want an iced version of the drink. Even though Latte and Iced Latte are two separate drinks and listed as such on the big board right behind me and in the menu.

    Oh, and Puzzle Man.

Puzzle Man's not technically a customer, seeing as he never buys anything. He's this skinny old man, not quite homeless, but he never bathes, so we have to keep a can of air freshener for when he comes to visit. But we don't quite have the heart to kick him out for reasons to follow.

He comes in about once a week to show off a completed jigsaw puzzle glued to a piece of cardboard. They're usually one of those 100-200 piece ones, but he just looks so proud. He simply holds up the puzzle with this great big grin until we complement him or praise the picture, at which point he'll say something along the lines of "I thought that kitty was about to bite me when I was puttin' this 'un together!" To which we're expected to say "Looks like!" or "I'm sure it did!" before he'll pack up and move on to the next store down the street.

Except for one day when instead of a puzzle, he brought in a collage made up of old pictures of him and his wife when they were younger, including the obituary clipping for his wife. He showed it with the exact same enthusiasm he uses when displaying his puzzles. Right down to the inane comment.

First off, Hello world. Or Salutations, or whatever greeting you prefer.

    Second:
"She was so real, I thought she was gonna jump right out of the collage and bite me." ? Musta been into BDSM?
    "I call murder on that!"

Hell, I'll drink hot chocolate when it's 90 degrees out...(hey, it's air-conditioned in the store!)

You work retail. You're supposed to be able to read customers' minds. About orders and suchlike...NOT what they're thinking about you as a robot--because EVERYONE knows that we aren't humans.

          Hi, Flood!

It's good of you to be kind to that old man. He must be very lonely. I bet you all are the only people he really has he can come talk to. That's very sad.

Kudos to you and your co workers for being kind.
