  • What part of "off limits" don't you get?

We're doing a reconfiguration of an active floor. This is always a recipe for disaster because despite verbal, email, and written instructions (orders) to stay out of construction zones, employees around the area feel a need to parade/stroll through the zone. It's a constant ongoing problem but this one particularly pissed me off.

This bit of construction involved knocking a hole in a wall for a doorway, and reconfiguring the cubicle. A more intelligent design because it allows for more direct access to the printer across the hall. The contractors knocked the wall out and left the framing up to put in the doorway, I'm in there moving the cubicle. Clearly this is still a construction zone; there's no wall there, only metal studs, the cubicle is in the process of being torn down and rebuilt. Seeing as it's an off limits construction zone, I've got my tools and materials blocking what will be the doorway.

Now for the past 5-10 odd years, employees have had no problem walking around the corner to get to the printer, but since there's a hole in what was the wall, now they've got to walk through there. This one bitch was on her third trip through it and complains to me about how I'm blocking the doorway. I remind her that it's a still a construction zone and she is not supposed to be in here. Her face contorts like a held a dead rat up to it and she continues stomping through. I make a comment to my partner about how they've been able to get through for the 5 years previous, but can't walk around now (with no foul language, no insults).

Well, number one, I told her she's doing something wrong, and number two, now I'm talking trash about her... the shit's gonna hit the fan now. She storms back to her cubicle (through the construction area), and starts squawking with her co-workers about the situation. I ignore this until they make a point of name dropping loud enough for me to hear; they say the name of the project co-ordinator, obviously to let me know that they're putting in a complaint. I look at my partner and say "now they're complaining about me", and use their method, loudly add "I hope they make sure to mention that it's the off limits construction zone that I'm blocking off".

I was fuming here and fortunately it was close enough to break time to walk out. I cooled off in that time and was able to complete the work without anything further. I just have to wait and see what comes of the complaint. I was totally following procedure and the employee was 100% in the wrong, so of course I completely screwed up. I made an employee unhappy so I'm a bad person.

There's good odds that THAT particular little fact will NOT be mentioned. By them, of course. By YOU, it will.
