  • Two "I don't work heres"

After grabbing some food from the student center, my roomie needed to get some stuff from the bookstore. You aren't allowed to bring stuff from outside the bookstore in so he set his stuff down on the counter for bookbags and stuff and I just leaned by and watched his stuff.

Standing there, staring off into space when some guy walks in, starts to walk past me, then stops and gives me the deer in the headlights look. He then asks me, "Oh, sorry, is it okay if I bring my bookbag with me?" I just said, "Beats me, I don't work here." He just walks on.

Still standing there, staring off into space, another guy walks in, looks at me, and asks, "Is it cool if I bring my bookbag in?" I said, "I don't know, I don't work here." He gives me a suspicious look then walked away.

The staff in our bookstore wear purple and gold shirts, that say "Bookstore" on them. I was wearing black gym shorts and a black Jets shirt. Come on, do I seriously look like I work there?

If you work retail or customer service you do put off a vibe. I used to get asked for help all the time when I was in retail, no matter what store I was in, how I was dressed, even if I was obviously carrying my own shopping bags.

I went to Goodwill after work last night.... I was in black pants and a long sleeved black shirt. No name tag. Nothing.

I was going through shirts (felt the need to shop, but not spend a lot!) and an older gentleman up at the register starting snapping his fingers, yelling, "Cash customer here!" I kept going through shirts. His wife, also older, rang the bell at the register, looking at ME, yelling, "We'd like to check out!" I nodded, "Uh. Ok." She rang the bell AGAIN. I yelled back - ya know, since they were yelling, "I DON'T WORK HERE!" which shut her up. She at least had the nerve to look embarassed when a clerk in a blue vest and name tag came popping up behind her from the other direction!!

If I did work there, does she (or him for that matter) think that's the way to get an employees attention!!?

See, one reason I am a nasty person is because unless they ask me directly, I never TELL them directly. Unless they say "Do you work here" I will never tell them I don't.

Well, unless the rare occasion happens that they are very, very nice about it.

I just become as mind-numbingly dense as they are. I mean, why would it even occur to me that someone thinks I work there when I don't? The more pushy or rude they are, the denser I become.

Hmmmm.....maybe a fun tactic would be to pretend that I think THEY work there? That might be good for a laugh. Can you imagine how they'd react if they asked for help and I said something like "Oh, no, I'm not your co-worker. By the way, could you tell me where the shampoo is?"

          I know, I know, I suck.

Yeah, I think it was the staring into space that did it.

I'll take your advice any day. One time I went into the Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach, wearing blue jeans and a Ron Jon t-shirt. I was not even aware of what was going to happen before I left my house that morning, but at least ten people asked me for assistance on stuff, and I had to tell them all "I don't work here". Since that time, if I do visit that place, I always make sure the clothes I'm wearing look nothing like the shirts and apparel the employees wear.

That would be too funny! I can only imagine the looks on their faces! LOL.
