  • This is NOT a bussiness

    I don't know where to put this, so I'm putting it here since I pitty the person he was trying to call..

    About a month or two ago, I was playing world of warcraft on my computer and talking to my guild over ventrilo. Normal day I guess. I had the phone beside me as I was expecting a call. Phone rings, I answer. Someone asking for a manager. wtf? (We've had this same phone number for roughly 18 years...)

    Quick recap:
    Me: Hello?
    SC (nothing better to call him): Can I talk to a manger please?
    Me: huh?
    SC: Can I talk to the manager?
    Me: What manager?
    SC: Are you the person who answers the phone? (wtf?)
    Me: I think you got the wrong number.
    SC: Is this (my number)?
    Me: Yes but-
    SC: (getting annoyed) then can I talk to a manager?

    It went on and on for a few minutes before he finally decided to hang up. I told my guild about it and they said I should have mentioned that it was a residential (sp?) house (Which slipped my mind)...

    Anyone got some additional perspective to offer? I'm confused here...

    Our local Braums used to take phone orders and their number was my number with the last two numbers switched.

    Most people would be "oops" or "I'm sorry", but every now and then I would get one who would not belive me and would even threaten to have me fired.

    Personally I always wanted to take an order and then drive out there for the person to show up.

      I know I must've mentioned this once, but one time I was walking past the payphone outside the store and got a call, someone asking for a plumber. O.o

        After the first round of his demanding and your explanation, you owe him nothing else. Hang up.

        Or...

        Tell him you are the manager and see what's on his mind. Tell him that you'll take care of the problem and hang up.

          The state of NJ website lists my home phone number as the contact number for a school. The phone book and the school's website are correct, but sending an e-mail to the website (after a LONG time tracking down where everyone was getting my number) did nothing.

          I finally started letting the answering machine screen ALL calls when I started getting angry messages on my machine threatening to sue me. Switched the message, too, which now makes MOST people realize that it's a residence.

            When I was about 11, our home number was very similar to the number of our small town's movie theater. (ours was 5658 and the theater's was 5685) I didn't realize this for quite awhile, and I remember, one day, someone called and asked what was playing. Me, being the helpful little 11 year old movie freak that I was, actually answered their question for them. It was only later that I realized, "hey, they got the wrong number, they were calling the theater."

            One of my great "Duh!" moments.

              Let me get this straight... they didn't think the fact a KID answered the phone was strange?

              LadyAndreca: thats what I'm guessing happened here, but come on... I obviously had no clue what he was after... most people would have figured out they had the wrong number by then.

              Thing is, Caller ID showed the number as clearly a Sydney/NSW number. I live about 3 hours south of Perth in WA.

                I love it when people get mad at us because they dialed the wrong number.

                It gets better when they call right back and get even more mad at us.

                  What you do then is keep them on the phone as long as possible and run up their long distance bill.

                    Ooh...a WoW player! I must admit that I don't much play WoW, but it is cool to have someone else on the CS board that enjoys RPG's!

                    As you can tell from my "avatar" I am an Elder Scrolls fan. Namely Oblivion as it is the latest one out!

                    You ever play Oblivion? I am probably as obsessed with this game as any WoW player could be. I have the tattoo...yeah, and I am a girl...extra sad.

                    I got WoW bought forme for my birthday from the work-experiance kid at..um..work. I created a character and am paying for it every month but hardly play. Maybe I should.

                    Sorry....I got all excited at another RPG fan!

                    I can't wait for Fable 2!!!!!!!

                      Did you try calling the school? Because they should be calling the phone book people. Or just call the phone book people yourself?

                          My parents' phone number is one digit off the main switchboard for the local hospital (their number ended 6111, the hospital's was 5111). We got a LOT of calls for the hospital, but my mum drilled into us that we should always be polite and just tell people that they had mis-dialled and let htem know the correct number. I think it can count on one hand the number of times someone was snotty about it.

                              pre caller ID and when you only had to dial 7 digits to get any local number (vs 10 used now) My parents phone number was very similar to a fast food place 30 min drive away. Basically our number was numeric order and the ff was not. (ie 789 vs 798) We continually got calls for it.
                              a few of the calls would be along the following lines
                              sw= silly woman
                              me= me

                              me= hello
                              sw= put (male name) on the phone
                              me= I am sorry there is no one here by that name
                              sw= that lying piece of crap he told me he was working today
                              me= what number are you trying to call
                              sw= don't sass me I am calling 798-####
                              me= I am sorry but that is not the number you dialed
                              sw= cussing at me for accusing her of dialing wrong number
                              I just hang up the phone

                              (not all cussed a small few would apologize and hang up)

                              then you had the people who would hit redial
                              duh= redial hitter
                              me=me

                              me=hello
                              duh=is this (fast food place)
                              me= no, I am sorry it isn't - please hang up and try dialing again
                              hang up phone

                              a few mili seconds later phone rings
                              me=hello
                              duh= is this (fast food place)
                              me= I am sorry you did not dial the correct number. . . their number is 798-####
                              hang up phone

                              me=hello
                              duh= well I am hitting redial but I keep getting you sorry - duh hangs up phone

                              phone rings again - I just let it ring

                              you really have to wonder - redial just dials back the last number called . . .if you aren't dialing it correctly in the first place - redial isn't going to change that

                              we also had the people who would call to place an order - and remember I am a pre-teen, teen when all this is taking place - I fully admit their were days that I would be annoyed and just act like I was taking the order - when they asked for total and when it would be ready - I told them to hang up and call the right number and they can get that information.
