  • "Road Closed to Thru Traffic" applies to YOU!

*mods, if this story doesn't fit in here, feel free to move it...

Anyhow, I just got off the phone with DH, with him telling me about the funny and not-so-funny happenings today. He works for a company that rents out traffic control equipment to utility companies, construction companies, cities, counties, the state, anyone who needs temporary lane shifts, road closures, etc. They mostly deal with utility companies and cities. My husband is responsible for not only pick up and delivery of this equipment around the metro area, but 90% of the time, he sets it up to MNDoT required specs. There is actually a lot to know in his job.

Anyhow, there is a project that Xcel energy is doing down in one of the southern MN suburbs (nowhere near the I-35 bridge). I believe he said they are burying new lines and taking down old pole lines. Anyhow, this has been going on all summer and each phase takes around 2-3 weeks, depending on the amount of trees and/or tree roots they need to contend with. This is resulting in the temporary closure and detours of various well-traveled roads for that amount of time.

The problem is, the local people seem to think that these signs don't apply to them or that they can just sneak by and get away with disobeying them. What they don't know (of if they do, they think they won't get caught) it is VERY illegal to disobey construction signs. If you try to drive through one that says "Local traffic only" and you don't live there, or have any business there, and you are caught, it is a minimum $1000 fine. And if you move the sign yourself, and you are not an authorized person, it is $1500 and you could be looking at jail time. Problem is, the cops have enough to do, without having to babysit random intersections.

Last week, DH started having to check on the projects daily, because people have been moving signs, to get through. So, he started loading each the signs down with 10 sandbags that each weigh 60lbs. That didn't seem to stop people's desire to continue through this one particular intersection, because they started driving up onto the lawns of the people on the corner lots and go around! So, the owners of those lots started to complain to the city. The cops still didn't have the time to sit there and wait. So they told the owners of the properties they could put objects there on the corners, to deter the culprits. One of the owners just put his boat&trailer there. The other guy didn't have a boat or anything large enough to spare... so, what did he come up with? Home-made spike strips! The cops gave him permission to do it too!

He took some old wood boards and hammered several large nails in them, spraypainted the whole things bright red, and anchored them into the ground using corkscrew anchors.

      That's farking awesome!

We've had road construction since forever in Wi. Lots of local streets are undergoing new pavement.

For some reason, dumbass yuppies and idiot rednecks would rather drive on a bumpy dirt road than take a detour.

Oh there are plenty "Road closed" signs, but they are placed just so that daredevils can go through anyways and tear up their tires and ruin their shocks.

Well, Albuquerque is known as the "Orange Barrel Capital of the World" for a reason. I can't even drive the one mile to work without seeing one. They haven't been as stupid as to do anything major during the Balloon Fiesta....yet.

I'd pay money to be there when the poor schmuck who hits them tries to claim road hazard warranty on his tires.

Don't worry, we would--whether we had your permission or not.

How fun would it be for the person who runs over those spikes to explain it to the cops? Because we all know they'd call them and complain hehe

Seriously though, signs are there for a reason. Why do some people think its okay to just pretend they're not there? Its like when you have a sign that says: "Danger, floor is unstable" or something to that effect and you know some idiot has to try it out.

ironically, the roads themselves aren't tore up, it is the 6ft easements on the edges of the properties along both sides of the road. They don't want any other traffic through there than needed, because of safety & liability.

you may be the "Orange Barrel Capital of the World", but the saying here in MN is that we don't have 4 seasons, we have two. Winter and Road Construction.

I gotta git me some of them! People are always driving unto my property. Not because of road construction but because they can't drive.

My mailbox has been taken out so many times I can't count. Two years ago some woman fell asleep at the wheel and 'took out' my maple tree. Several years ago a drunk left the road and plowed into my garage pushing my car through the wall and into my breezeway.

                        .

Now where'd I put them spikes???

I can vouch for that. What I don't understand is, it seems that, most of the time, they're working on the same parts of the same streets over and over again. I'll never understand why they can't get it right the first time. I guess they're creating their own job security; do a half assed job, and you'll have to fix it again and again.

You know, they say the sun will burn out in 5 billion years or so. That's a shame, because then the road crews are going to have to work in the dark.

A lot of our roads are torn up in this area as well. One road (a fairly main road for college traffic) was closed in front of one of the dorms this summer (aka one of, if not the, largest dorm in the USA). I was very impressed by the way they got the work done on it. They realized that move-in was starting on X date. They had the road open and useable in just under a week before move-in. Thank God as if they had to detour that traffic onto the side street on the north side, that would have been chaos. 2,000+ students trying to move all their crap in, lugging their families as well, yeah, that would have sucked.

But, on topic, bravo to the landowners who don't want their stuff messed up. I want to see the first person to drive over the "stop-strips".
