  • This happened not once, but TWICE today!

I knew today was going to be... unique from the time I was driving into work and saw two people illegally use the cop turn arounds on the interstate.

So, most of you know that if you go to the bank, and you want cash from your checking account at the teller line, you make out a check to either "Cash" or to yourself (our bank will let you do either, but some banks have you make the check out to your self and wont honor a check made out to cash). Another thing that works for getting cash out of your account is to use the ATM that's right outside the building.

Anyway, a woman comes in and says that she wants to take cash out of her account. Most of the time when people say this, they want money out of either their savings or their money management account. So I ask the woman, "Are you taking this out of your checking or your savings account?" She replies by saying, "My checking account." So I asked her if she had a check with her in order to take money out of her account and she said, "Of course not, why would I need that?" I explained that, unlike a savings account, you need a check out of your checkbook to take money out of your checking account. I also told her that I could make her an over the counter check, but we have to charge $1 a sheet for those. So she whines, "Well, if I go to the ATM, will I not be charged for taking money out of my account?" To which I replied, "Sure, you can do that."

*facepalm* Why didn't she just do that in the first place??!?! And secondly, why did she have to be so snippy about it, even after I explained it so nicely to her?

And then, about 20 minutes before closing, another woman comes in and does the exact same thing! Only this one complained that she didn't want to pay the $1 to get a check, nor did she want get a $20 bill, but she wanted it broken down smaller. Now, I have no problem with breaking down bills into smaller denominations for people who use the ATM. I do it all the time, especially for drive up customers. But still...

Why must people be so difficult.

Oh the horror of actually needing a CHECK to get money from a CHECKING account!

    Gods man, some people.

On the second one, that's dumb too, it's super easy to get a $20 from the ATM and have the teller break it up however you like.

Absolutely! We have people who go to the drive up all the time, get a $20 bill out, then ask for something like a roll of quarters and a $10, or something to that effect.

Our bank in general is not known for having the brightest customers in the world. We actually joked about that in a teller meeting to go over the new bounce protection service we started offering. We also went over how some select customers would not be receiving the bounce protection service since they can never seem to keep their bank accounts in the positive to begin with.

You don't let the customer use a withdrawal slip? We had customers who ran out of checks, needed cash in non $20 increments and it was no big deal.

The gas station I work at has an ATM inside the store, and we change $20 and $50 notes all the time.

I've actually had customers stand in front of me with their checkbook in hand and say "I don't have any withdrawl tickets for my checking account."

I almost envy that you get to charge for counter checks. My bank used to charge a quarter a piece for debit forms, but that was years ago before I started. I usually write out at least ten a day.
                "Any free samples?"
                "Sorry, not today."

Come on people, we're a bank not a bakery.

At our bank, a check is their withdrawal slip. Well, for a checking account anyway. If they come in for a money management account or a savings account and want to take money out of either of those, we do have free withdrawal slips provided. We just don't provide free withdrawal slips for checking accounts.

Come to think of it, I've never actually been to a bank where they let you take money out of a checking account at the teller line without an actual check.

And I actually know of an ATM that dispenses money in increments other than $20. Of course, it's not around here, it's down the other side of New Hampshire. The one time I used the non $20 ATM I thought it was the weirdest thing.

My bank must be weird. I can get $10 from the ATM if I wanted to. Also to get money from my checking account I just either need to show my id and they will fill out a withdrawl slip for me for free. Even when I switched backs they did that. I never heard of a bank charging you for withdrawl slips, I just assumed that was common thing. I guess now I know different.

Okay, I'm going to blow everyone's mind here and elaborate on my earlier post.

I don't need cheques to withdraw cash from my chequing account.
I don't need withdrawl slips to withdraw cash from my chequing account.

All I need to do is take my bank card up to the teller, and say "I want X amount of cash in Y denominations." They take my card, scan it, and give me my money. If it's a large withdrawl, I'll have to sign a slip that gets printed right then that shows previous and current balance, and amount withdrawn. And there's no charges for any of that.

Your alls banks is weird, yo.

I'm going to have to agree with Boomjokey, all of my adult life, all I've ever needed to withdraw and deposit cash was my ATM/Cheque guarantee card.

Now I know things are different in the US to the UK, but it seems kind of archaic to still be filling in slips of paper.

Even my US bank allows withdrawals without a check/cheque. Though they do like to have a withdrawal slip (free, of course and takes 30 seconds to fill out - they'll even do it for you if you ask nicely) if you don't have a check. They just ask that you swipe your ATM card or drivers license on a run of the mill PIN pad if you're inside (both methods require you to enter your ATM PIN). Otherwise you need to have a photo ID.

But I also use a bank that's focused on customer service (Wachovia) - first bank I've ever used where I've had no regrets. If you bring in a direct deposit form from your employer they'll even do the paperwork for you.

I have an account with Bank of America, and I just need my ID or bank card to get money from my checking account.

My mother had a credit union account, and they had slips you would fill out for anyt type of transaction, and they didn't charge for any of them, either.

Any bank that charges for a slip of paper they require you to fill out is too nickle-and-dime for my tastes.
