  • Bit late...

Oh well... I might as well still post this now!

I'm 24 and I work at a well known high street chain here in the UK, and have done for 4 years. Best thing is, because we sell a bit of everything, the stores that don't want to deal with their SCs tend to send them to us! And as long term staff they often get handed to me ^_^

Luckily not THAT many postable stories yet, but I'm building up a fair collection as I go... But it's good to see at the end of a rubbish day that maybe I don't have it as bad as some

So "high street" is kind of a UKer generic for what we in the states call "ritzy" or "top-shelf" or "high end" ie., the antonym of "discount chain."
(The chain part I'd guessed )

            Gotcha, thanks.

Um, no not really, the high street historically was the main road through the centre of a town/cty that contained all throughfare and had all the shops. Now it is a generic term for an area with a high density of shops, regardless of quality or type. So a high street chain is store that can be found on a lot of high streets, ie in most towns.

cheers for clearing it up crazylegs

I've never been great at explainations

yeah, basically ubiquitous (is that how you spell it? I doubt that's right) stores you see in every town practically

though those seem to be the ONLY type of stores around here now!
