  • I don't wish to know that!

The scene: work (of course). Behind me are some carpenters shifting cigarette display cases around because local laws regarding tobacco displays have changed.

SC: "About time they changed the damn smoke laws. I've got a big scar and missing half a lung from smoking. Also my friend's going to kill himself next week because he's got lung cancer."

I really didn't wish to know that.

I once had a guy talking about his wife having had part of her colon removed and how she could only eat liquid food now and... well more and in more detail...

He didn't notice that my eyes were screaming, and kept on for a good 10 mins... >_<

      sometimes, I hate people!

I have to admit I'm really sucky when it comes to those kinds of people.

I had one guy come into the store to pre-pay gas and buy smokes. He starts going on about the price then about his wife having cancer and having to breath out a hole in her neck and how she can't do anything anymore blah blah blah.

I tuned him out way before then.

When he was finished I remember looking at him and he said "Well?"
        me: Well what?
him: Aren't you going to say anything about how horrible it is?
me: Sir, I have as much sympathy for you as I do for someone who drinks Drano on their spare time.
him: that's a horrible thing to say.
me: I'm sorry sir but anyone who willingly and knowingly ingests a toxic substance deserves no sympathy.

at that point I asked him to get out of the way so I could help the customer that just walked in. he stood there sputtering for a few moments before leaving in a huff.

The best part is my boss loves me so unless I do something really bad I really can't get in trouble for talking back to the customers

I like smoke laws that benefit non-smokers (like "take it outside" laws), and I have friends that are smokers so if you want to do that to yourself that's your problem.

But I HATE it when people go on about laws needing to be changed because they gave themselves cancer or whatever. Do you not watch TV? Can you not read labels? Have you not seen a doctor in the past fifty years? Because unless all three are true, then I see no reason why we have to pay cops/authorities to spend the extra time and effort and propaganda to get you to stop killing yourself. That's your problem, not ours.

About 20 years ago, I worked as a cashier at a gas station and met all kinds of folks. The one I'll never forget was the fella who had been in Vietnam and told me that as a result of his injuries he had gotten hooked on morphine suppostories. So for over 15 years, he'd been sticking morphine up his ass.

I am soooo glad he told me that.

Ah, yes, the SC's that have nothing to do but talk to anyone that will listen to them. Let me see, I think I can conjure up a list of those I have had over the years like that.

              * Lady one time that told me all about her ingrown toenail surgery.

              * Lady with cancer, and how it had spread to every private part of her body.

              * Man who told me all about his podiatrist visit (they work on feet, if you don't know), and how green and crusty the doctor said his feet were.

If I have ailments like these, I certainly would not want to share them with the rest of the world. I work in telecommunications, and none of those examples pertain to that industry!

What is it about being in customer service that leads people to tell us allll about their disturbing ailments? It's usually stuff they wouldn't even tell family.

Far as I'm concerned, the only people entitled to retribution from their own smoking are people who got hooked before 1965. Until that first report came out, the tobacco companies were actually trying to tell people that smoking was PROMOTING HEALTH!! -.-

I read this on b3ta.com once under best comebacks, I LOL'd.

We, the smokers were hidden away in the corner, making sure none of the militant anti-smokers would have a chance to steal our glorious nicotine.

He walks over, and starts preaching.

You really shouldn't smoke young man...
I used to smoke 60 a day, and then I had a lung taken out.

I asked him if he only smoked 30 a day now.

                        He left me alone

Well, actually he needs to smoke 120 a day to get the same level of nicotine intake...

Cigarettes were officially labeled as "bad for your health" in 1964, but it was known and reported as early as the '40's that it was likely they posed a health risk. My mother and aunt both started smoking in their early teens before 1965, but they both also readily admit that they knew it was bad for them when they started, so nobody who has been smoking for less than, say 45 years, really has anyone to blame but themselves.

My grandmother made me promise to never donate money to the Red Cross because during World War II they gave cigarettes to the soldiers. Many men who had never smoked started because of the stress and to join in with the others in their platoons. So many young men who survived the war later died of cancer, including a few of her relatives, that she never forgave the Red Cross.

I give to a lot of charities, but I've never given to the Red Cross because of the promise I made to her.
