  • Scam attempt?

It was a decent day the day I had this one, but it confused the hell out of me and left me wondering if it was a scam attempt, or an attempt to get info.

In this case, this lady is the owner of the business, small shop or something, that I've dealt with before. It was a decently memorable name for a cute business, and though I'd love to share it, won't. Also, from the second I answered the phone, she was jumpy and talking really fast and seemed nervous for some reason.

    SC: Woman on phone.
    Me:

Me: (greeting, gets account number, verifies info, which in this case is phone number... not that hard to obtain but it's acceptable) How can I help you?
SC: (as stated, is acting all flustered and speedtalking) I need to make a payment.
Me: Would you like to pay your full balance at this time, 143.26?
    SC: No, I'll pay 100.00.
Me: Okay, now would you like to use check over the phone, which is a free service?
(I hate that statement, because nine times out of ten I get asked, "How much is that" "does that charge" or "is that free?" Ugh.)
    SC: Yes.
Me: Alright, I'm making the payment for the amount of 100.00, which will withdraw from the account tomorrow morning, I just need the routing and account numbers please, whenever you're ready.
SC: Just use the information on file.
Me: I'm sorry, the information might be on file, and the automated system could access that, but we representatives cannot access that private information. I would need you to tell me what numbers you want to use.
(Which, if course, is untrue, we COULD look at it, but under no circumstances are we to tell the customers we can, because it would give them reason to be nervous. Also, I personally pride myself in NEVER looking at this information, since I can't use it anyway, so I haven't even pulled up the screen that can in the entire seven months I've been working at this job.)
SC: I ALWAYS use the information on file when I make payments!
Me: (looking over the notes on the account, seeing she always makes payments with reps) Unfortunately, I do see that you make payments with representatives each time you called, the last time you called on 10/1 you spoke with me personally and I took that payment, and I can assure you that you GAVE me the information that I am requesting, because I cannot access that information. Neither can any representative here.
SC: I ALWAYS make my payments with my stored information!! I want a manager!!
Me: Sure, just one moment. (puts on hold)

After about five seconds, I notice that she had hung up almost immediately. Checking back over the account three days later, I still see she hasn't called back or made a payment. Suspicious, no?

Could have been. IMHO, If SC's don;t want to wait for a supervisor/manager it seems they don;t want to get caught.

The only way I can really see this being a scam is if you had pulled up the stored information, and the caller asked, "And what do you have in your system for my account number and routing number?" But it certainly could have been.

I think that may be why she "wanted" a supervisor, or got angry, cause I refused to do it.

Sounds suspicious to me. At my place of business, we have this kind of information stored if the person is using our automatic payment system. However, if I or any other employee views the account info, it shows nothing but stars and the last four digits of their account and/or their routing number. The same goes for credit cards. Even with this, I never divulge this info to any customer.

As for the usual "I want your manager/supervisor/God you worship that will strike you down and turn you into a pillar of salt like Lot's wife", etc, to me, it's the customer's way of showing they have "fake balls" that will intimidate you.

Yeah, it definitely sounds shady. Sort of a half hearted attempt at social engineering. My theory is if you had said you could pull the information up, she would have asked you to confirm it.

Yeah, good thing I am a heartless, horrible woman, who doesn't know what I'm doing and am relentless in my stupidity.

I have some gems for everyone later I've been saving, including two PRICELESS ones from yesterday... but I just have to get one more 10 hour shift down today before I have the heart to post them all. Maybe I'll get a few more to add to them too.

y'all have no idea how often i get callers like that. We do keep guest information on file, but for obvious reasons the only way we can bring up that information is using their membership number. And no I can't look up the number with just your name... for that matter I can't look that up period, if you want the number looked up you need to call an different number altogether and no i can't transfer you (membership services is handled in a different call center). Even if i could look it up... if you don't have your membership number I have no way of knowing you are who you say you are, and there is no way in hell i will use a credit card on file without being certain that it's the correct person. the conversation normally goes

me: "are you a member of our priority club"
sc: "yes i am, but i've lost my number, just look it up with my name, john doe"
me: "i'm sorry sir, but we don't have the ability to bring up personaly information without a membership number, for privacy and personal security reasons"
sc: "but everyone there knows who i am, you must just be new and not recognize me"
note, i've been there 9 months now
me: "sir, I have been here for 9 months, I handle at least 50 calls a day on a slow day, over 90 on a busy day, and end up reserving about half the people who call in, I still don't recognize your voice. I can still enter all your information manually and then you can later add your membership number at time of check in"
sc: "well, i don't have my credit card with me, i figured you people would be able to look it up, i'll just have to call back"
me: "would you like a courtesy hold, I can get all your information except you credit card and then you'd have 24 hours to call back with the card number"
sc: "no, i'll just call back tomorrow"

without fail, I will check the next couple of days and surprise surprise, no reservations for mr doe.
