  • And So, the Retail Tales

I haven't posted a couple of my stories in a long time so I figured it was about time I should post a few snippets from the past week or two that I remember. For the record I have put in my two weeks at my current job, but then decided to stay as a twice a week shift worker to maintain my (former) co-workers sanity. I am now moving on to the big retail fish. I wont mention the name still...

    Stories!

    Just......just leave plz..

SC: Hey i wanna store credit card!
Me: Mmmmk, Here is the signup sheet and can I see some ID?
SC: Id why do you need my ID?
Me: We have had problems in the past where people would use stolen credit cards to get a store credit card so i need to match this to your current credit card sig.
    SC: My current credit card?
Me: Yah we run the credit check using your VISA or MC.
SC: What the hell man I just want a credit card, futureshop just lets you get one!
    Me: We arent futureshop.....
SC: well my VISA is maxxed so it probably wont work will it!?
    Me: Probably not...
    SC: This is BULLSHIT.
    <storms out>

Yes....tell me you want a credit card, tell me your VISA is maxxed, and mention that you got one no hassle at Futureshop that I am also going to assume is maxxed.

Yes I do know better then you

This one was a co-worker from another store. For the record he was around 35-45 and I am a lowly kid at the tender age of 20.

SC: I wanna use my staff discount!
Me: Alrighty <swipes staff badge etc etc etc.>
    Me: That will be $xx.xx.
    SC: On MC.
ME: errrr sorry but you cant use your discount on a credit card. Wont work in the system.
SC: yes it does I do it at my store all the time!
Me: No you dont, look. <swipes MC and gets error msg> See?
SC: You just dont know how to do the job!
Me: See here? <shows him my badge with has a larger staff discount since we get bigger discounts the longer we serve with the company> That means I know how to do this job and I have been here a lot longer then you. I know its a stupid rule and I had to learn the hard way as well but I am not wrong about it.
    SC: Fine! Debit then.

Don't doubt he who works 40+ hrs a week at a retail job for 3 yrs when its obvious that you have a nice shiny new badge saying you worked here for less then 1....

Believe me, I know it sucks

SC: WTF you mean you didnt get GH3 in!?!?
ME: We just havent recieved the shipment.
SC: What the fuck! Do you know how lame this is?
Me: Sure do. I have been waiting forever for this and saving up my store points so i can get a nice and juicy staff discount for it. But guess what? It aint here and i gotta wait or pay full price for it as well.
    SC: O...

People. Why do you think when we dont get something in its only an inconvenience for the customer? Employees are customers as well and we dont enjoy not having something. Sometimes we want it just as bad if not more then you do.

Your lying to me? What a suprise.

Note** This was before the PS3 had dropped in price to $499.99 for the 80GB +Motorstorm bundle. At the time it was $649.99. O and I wasalso off shift when this regular came in.

SC: Hey buddy! How much for your PS3?
Me:<in street clothes wandering but still being helpful to some regulars> O its on for $649.99.
    SC: Oooooo... no discount?
Me: Nope *sigh* no discount <this is a very regular occurance with this customer>
Sc: Well I was in another store and the lady there told me it was on for 349.99....
    Me: Nope, it isnt.
    SC: Can you check?
Me: Fine.... <checks, its not, big suprise>
SC: Well I know its actually at 349.99....
Me: Either you are mistaken or the lady was mistaken. Im not dropping it below 649.99 for anyone.
    Sc:<wanders around a bit then leaves>

This guy is in every 2nd day pullin the same shit. "At the other store its xx.xx.....' with the same drawling voice....

    I Hate you.....

Please dont act suprised when I express myself in a very quiet way how much I hate you when you decide to pay for a $22 movie in all pennies and quarters NOT rolled up. Please also dont get annoyed when I sit there and count every last damned penny you gave me since i wont take your assurance that 'thats 200pennies in that there bag' Please also dont get annoyed when I mention I wont do this again and your gunna have to get a manager to ring you through if you come in with 3 bags again. O ignore those 6 people behind you on the busiest day of the year so gar. They enjoy listening to your change bounce off my till.

    You made that choice..

When I told you that your CC wasnt accepted and I mentioned this usually has to do with a past balance not being paid but there are multiple other reasons that it may not work please dont assume that a small 5 dollar payment to your account will fix the problem. Also when I tell you that it probably wont work, I do mean that. Also when I tell you that I cannot refund a bill payment also believe that I mean that. Please dont act suprised when it doesnt work again. And please dont try to shortchange me since you paid me 5 bucks. That went to your bill payment. You made that choice.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are all the ones that come to mind at the moment. Other highlights that deserve a thread almost to themselves are the guys who wanted to buy a fridge and not give us any of their info, he who was pissed that I ID'd him for a PS3 purchase and the stupid preteens who decided that our ladies washroom needed to look like the inside of a blender.

O well wont have to put up with these guys for much longer. Sat is my last fulltime day ^^
Fan? This is shit. Shit? Meet fan.

    arghh.. total suckiness..

The "it's cheaper at the other store" guy is quite the well-known fellow.. I just don't understand, if it is that much cheaper somewhere else, why do they just not buy it there? Probably because it's a big fat lie!

On another note.. Do you really have to accept payments in 200 pennies? Luckily by law here, anyone is not obliged to accept more than 25 coins of the same value in a transaction. So if someone came up to me with the sad remains of their dead piggybank, I am allowed to turn them away

Not having worked in retail before, I can't say I've ever had to deal with people playing the "it's cheaper at X" card. I'd suggest putting on a surprised expression, and quickly exclaim "Cool! I'll get our stock from there! They sell it for less than wholesale! Wow!"

For bonus points you could follow that with "What a moronic business plan. Selling stuff for less than you paid for it."

        An evil idea!

The next time "discount guy" comes in call his bluff. "Sorry ItemX is not on sale here, you should buy it at the other place. You know it's so cheap, at that price, I want one. Where is that store? "

What the hell? I just paid $380 for a 20Gig PS3, and that was only because they were clearing out inventory for the new 40Gig models coming out for the holidays. If you're going to lie about something, at least make it believable.

Nope. In the US, a business can refuse any form of payment that is deemed "unreasonable." We've got a lot of places such as fast food and convenience stores that have signs that say "nothing larger than a $20" because they don't keep change for it and it's not reasonable to expect them to.

So, if you've got that much change, find a bank or a Coinstar and get the hell out of everybody's way.

My work (a wholesale dealer in sometimes nearly impossible to find parts) gets this all the time. Our rule is that if you can fax us a copy of the quote, we'll match it. Because on the stuff that's no longer manufactured, prices can be exceedingly fluid.

One of the people has a few customers that come up with ridiculously low prices on items. She's always asking where these sellers are so that we can buy from them, because the prices are so low. Of course, she never gets an answer, because it's always a lie. And (since we're usually the only ones with the part) she almost always gets the orders, too, at her original quoted price.
