  • Momentary loss of Sanity.

So, I finally lost it today and there's probably a good chance that if this was monitored I'll probably be let go. I just couldn't wrap my mind around this guy.
Lil background I work in mail order coffee, yay. No obligation, cancel at any time, read your information and you'd know that.

So buddy calls in and he received his second shipment, uh-oh he doesn't want it. Fine, whatever, my talk time is high. I claimed the shipment and offer apologies, all the polite ego-stroking steps to make irate customers happy customers. Even credited the shipment for him. Didn't even have to send it back. (this isn't something special we always do this) Anyway, I explained what I was doing the entire way and this guy could not get it through his head. I don't know, maybe he's not used to having to fight for something.
Regardles, I mentioned about five times that I had credited the shipment, he would not recieve anymore and he didn't not have to send it back.
Then I asked if there was anything else and he has the balls to ask me, in the snottiest tone I have ever heard:
"So am I going to have to call the attorney general about getting this coffee taken care of?"
I...I just couldn't do it, I completely forgot what I was doing and I asked him.
"...You mean to tell me, you want to call the attorney general for thirty dollars worth of coffee? Are you KIDDING me?" We were both so shocked...I'm really surprised he didn't ask for a supervisor.
All I want to know is, how stupid do you have to be to completely ignore what's being said to you? I know, you get it every day but this was a new low.
    Wow..just wow.
Ever get those customers with no information? They've been waiting for HOURS but they don't have their info!
'Well I had it just a minute ago..'

That doesn't sound that bad to me. Would you really be let go over a momentary lapse that didn't even have profanity?

I suppose it's possible. Talking back to a customer could get you fired.

At my store, arguing or talking back to a customer like that would probably get you at least a talking-to.

My boss told somebody off by saying "I don't pay your wages, they do. Sure, some of them are idiots but an idiot's money is as good as anyone else's."

We are allowed to back-talk to people who are trying to scam us though.

i like my manager's take on it... don't feel bad about turning away someone who will end up costing us more than they pay... ie, the person who is going to become a guest relations nightmare, take up huge amounts of our payroll to placate them, demand comps on everything for their troubles, etc... feel free to turn them away and let some other company eat the cost.

You mean "not having to not fight for something." maybe?

And this world would be a much better place if people were not only allowed, but encouraged to say things like that to people making outrageous claims. Some egos need regular popping or else they get swollen and infected.

              Wow...I mean, whoa....
And considering what I would have come out with when confronted with such snotty idiocy, I think you showed remarkable restraint! Hope it all goes well.

Well, unless your company is really strict, that sounds like something maybe worthy of a verbal "warning" but if they fired you over that they need to relax a bit...

I can feel your pain. Many of the folks I consider SCs I do so not because they are rude, nasty or scammers (although many certainly are!) but rather because talking to them is like holding a conversation with a slab of rock. No matter how many times or how many different ways you state something, it just doesn't seem to penetrate.

I unfortunately (fortunately?) sit between two supervisors when taking calls, so I obviously have to be careful about how I respond to idiots like yours. One thing that works for me and can't get me in trouble is after a question like that I respond in my nicest, most polite voice like I'm talking to an extremly dense, but well-loved child. I make sure to mention how many times I've previously stated my position and then use such tiny, simple words to re-explain my position that even the dull ones pick up on what I'm trying to say.

The vast majority of the time it doesn't get to that point, and I don't like being anything but polite to people but sometimes there's nothing else left to do...
