  • Another round of "But I did it before!"

Okay, everyone knows the line. "I got away with it before, it's BS that you're not letting me now!"

And I just got it from this whiny girl who complained that she was assessed a $250 fine for having candles in her room. That's strictly prohibited, whether they've been lit or not. There's a long list of stuff we can't have in our rooms, but candles are one of the things that actually gets you a fine.

Apparently it's either a new rule or BS (despite it being neither) because she had candles in her room last year and no one said anything! Also, this fine is a couple weeks old by this point because she couldn't be bothered to check her mail. So I really doubt the person she has to talk to is going to be swayed. I told the girl "It's not a new rule, and it's in the handbook. The fine's valid, and it isn't going to be reversed. But if you really wanna contest it, you've gotta talk to J." (Who is notoriously anti-BS. If this girl pulls attitude, she's likely to get slapped with a few more fines/infractions)

She goes off, without even asking when she can talk to J or anything. This is what I get for covering someone's lunch break.

I love hearing that, and unfortunately, it always seems like 99 per cent of the time, the SC gets their way on it.

By the way, is this a hotel room you're talking about?

Not with me. I always say no the first time.

Sounds like a dorm room. At my school, we can't have candles in the dorms (which i don't reside in) either.

Guess what the bookstore sells? If you said "candles", you win.

Alternatively, if you said "$150+ Skateboards", you are also correct.

If you said "Heroin", I'll have to consult with the judges.

I would vote dormitory as well. The dorms I lived in for the past few years had candles forbidden also, be they lit or just existing in the room. If you were caught with them, they just confiscated them.

But seriously, that girl needs a flounder upside the head.

I had a single candle in my room for 2 of the 3 years I lived on campus. As far as I know, they weren't forbidden, though if they were, I was never called on it. Still, I can certainly understand why they would be, since they are an obvious fire hazard that does not mix well with drunken tomfoolery.

What I can not understand though (on an off-topic note) is why Christmas lights would be considered a safety violation. I was once fined $50 for putting up two short (25 bulbs each) mini-light strings and a small (under 2 feet tall) fake Christmas tree in my room. Yes, they were wrapped around a railing, but it was just a guard railing at the top of the stairwell (it was a suite). To this day I still don't get it.

In our dorms, we aren't even allowed to have candles with the wicks removed. It's fairly obvious to everyone that a candle, by definition, must have a wick, right? And so removing the wick renders the candle both unusable and no longer a candle, but a block of wax?

I personally haven't had any issues since I don't have candles in my room, but some of my gf's friends got nailed for buying Yankee candles from their dance team fundraiser, then removing the wicks and leaving the wax blocks out to freshen the room. They all got fined for it. What bothered me was that none of them fought it after one ran headfirst (figuratively speaking) into a hard-assed RD who refused to believe that the wicks were removed, or that removing the wicks somehow made them no longer candles, or something of that nature.

I'm tempted to just buy a stick of wax (or a dozen) to leave around my room so that when they try to fine me I can point out that they're full of it.

So yes, I agree that this sounds like a dorm setting.
