  • We can't refund that.

I work in a video game store when I'm not working at the college.

My store is slow and has a lot of repeat business, so I rarely get any stories from there. My old store, however, is completely different.

I used to work in one of the highest revenue stores in the company. It is always busy and constantly has something going on. As a result, there's always a sucky customer story coming in from the store. My manager tells me these stores with glee, as they amuse him as well.

About a month ago a lady came in with a used Playstation 3 that she had purchased the day before. She wanted to return it. This isn't good, as we have "All used sales are final" printed on our receipts. So the clerk (J) told her that this couldn't be done. Then she tried to tell J that it was broken. J tried to verify this, but as she didn't want him to hook it up and it was her property, he didn't test it. However, he refused to do a refund, as he couldn't verify that it was broken.

She blew up. She started swearing and screaming in a rather impressive fit of rage. J was told that her brother was a lawyer and she knew the law said we had to take it back and blah blah blah. Then J was told that her nine-year-old son had taken her credit card and bought it without her permission.

That made story number four (I can't remember one of them). J was smelling desperation at this point.

Finally, the woman called the cops. She dialed 911 and had the officers come from the station two blocks away to deal with this mess. Two things about that: the station is two blocks away (as is city hall), and the guys at that store know the cops, as they shop there all the time. IN addition to that, J had every right to call the cops to escort her from the building. Which is actually what happened. An officer asked him if he wanted her to leave. He said yes so they made her go home (or away, at least), after telling her there was nothing they could do.

She left the ps3 on the counter.

So the District Manager and Store Managers get called in about the whole mess. The ps3 goes into a box and gets left in the stockroom, not to get touched on pain of death. She gets phone calls to let her know that we are holding it for her and we would like her to come in and pick up her property.

After a month of this, she comes back in. Does she come to pick up the ps3? No. She's there to return her Wii. Her reasoning? "*Company name* is full of shit and I don't want it to have my money." This time, however, the Store Manager (N) is there. N is unable to process the refund for some reason (it is a legitimate refusal) and she gets set off again. However, this time she is there during an extremely busy Saturday afternoon.

    In her tantrum, she:
    * does the usual swearing and name calling. N asks her to stop swearing, as small children are present.
    * knocks over a pile of games that are a different customers, prompting the second guest to storm back to the counter yelling "No you didn't, bitch!"
    * goes through the lawyer nonsense again.
    * grabs a strategy guide (the hardback version of the Twilight Princess guide, which is very thick and heavy) and hits N in his forehead with the spine of the book.

She actually hit him over this. N simply balled his fists up, took about 3 steps back and told her to "Get the fuck out of my store."

She ran while he called the cops. They were there in no time, as they are close and friends. Since she had traded there before, they had her name, address, phone number and driver's license number.

Turns out she had 14 warrants out for her arrest, not including a fresh assault and battery.

    Good game lady, good game.

      Ugh.

I especially hate the people that try to return broken used systems two years after they bought it without a receipt, then bitch at me because I won't do it. I'll get the usual excuses, "I didn't have time to come back!" (in two years?), "My brother's mother-in-law's aunt bought it and I'm returning it for them!" (then call their ass up and get that receipt), or the classic, "I didn't know I had to have the receipt to return it!"

Or when they try to "return" the stack of unopened memory cards and still-shrinkwrapped games they just stole from Wal-Mart across the parking lot.

I hope her brother is a damn good lawyer for all the crap it sounds like she's gotten herself into!

This lady was obviously a nut, but I am always amused at people that think there is a law that a store must take something back. There isn't. As long as the store posts the policy they have all the right in the world to refuse it. And as much as I always try to stay professional, I would have cracked uo when she refused to allow your coworker to verify the system was broken. What a joke! Anyways, she was just a nut and she won't have to worry about video games in jail!

I can never understand why people who misuse 911 never have to pay any consequence for it.

So what became of the Playstation 3 that she left at the store?

Because the laws vary by city, county and state, RK. Many places you can get a fine for misusing 911. The fine in San Francisco, for instance, is several hundred dollars. Other places don't even have any laws on the books regarding it.
Because as we all know, on the Internet all men are men, all women are men and all children are FBI agents.

That's just whacked. The first scenario sounds entirely likely...woman comes in in an attempt to take back a system. I don't know what policies are for that kind of thing, but I can understand that she went out of control and how it occurred. The SECOND situation, however, that's just crazy! Even crazier still is that she had already been hauled off the property once but she had the gall to come back and try to scam again. I say scam, because that's certainly what it seems like...that or she's mental.

Now, that's a story worth telling. 14 arrest warrants out? Were they all for assault and battery like in this story? Doesn't sound very smart to me being she left the PS3 there without getting her money back, then somehow felt you all would not remember her the next time. My goodness.

I'm wondering where she got this money to even purchase these consoles. A PS3, or even a Wii, aren't exactly cheap. And then to just leave the PS3 at the store and think nothing of it.

I'd say she's a little touched in the head (moreso than N!!).

                      The manager was o.k. . . . right??

I hope that woman did time for that.
This area is left blank for a reason.

We get similar people trying to return games that 'Don't work and are faulty'.

We simply take said game to console/computer - start playing the game and lo and behold it works perfectly! get the fuck out.

Or they say that their son already has this game. Then why is the packaging ripped? He doesn't need to OPEN the pack to know what game it is.

We have a zero tolerance on game refunding, new or used.

I don't think that they were. Some of them were probably for something stupid like traffic or parking tickets, as a lot of people in these parts have that sort of thing going. But then again, she was pretty dumb, so who knows?

Mail order catalogues, perhaps? I have known of several people who have either had the nerve to order something on mail order and say it never arrived, or had the lack of sense to order an item , pay a few weeks off, then get desperate for instant cash and sell the item at a massive loss. And repeat the process several times....
