  • I want my, I want my,

    I want my Kink TV!

Been thinking about doing this thread for a while, and the "It Came From The 80's Weird Video" Thread inspired me to get off my butt and do it.

I run YouTube on my computer like it's a radio. And, as you know, I'm old broad that watched a lot of MTV in my late high school/college days. Back when MTV actually rocked and didn't suck and played actual music.

So, in tribute to my sometimes cheesy sense of retro fun, I'm going to post vids from from that time period. I may add commentary. Please feel free to add your own and your own commentary. Let's play 1980's VJ.

I thought it would be fun for the older people to revisit this stuff and maybe interesting for the younger forks who were too young to get into that at the time.

This is a totally appropriate pick for the first post: The Buggles. First vid MTV played when it first came aired On August 1, 1981, at 12:01 a.m.

    Awesome!

Oh yes, I loved eighties videos. I wanted to be Madonna!

This is a wonderful idea, RK. I too remember the eighties and I'd love to add things to this thread from time to time.

So in honor of that, here is THE MOMENT when Madonna first became an icon of controversy. This is her performance at the very first MTV video awards of Like A Virgin. It looks tame now, but people majorly freaked when this was broadcast on live television---she's wearing a torn up "wedding dress", simulates masturbation with her veil, and shows her underpants at the end. Oh, and note she was wearing her infamous 'boy toy' belt over the ensemble. People were saying her career was over after this, but she knew what she was doing. Her infamy sky-rocketed and pop music has never been the same.

I have to admit, while I wasn't a Madonna fan, it's fun to revisit that vid. And now two decades later, I have to respect her business sense! Here's a woman who knows about keeping it fresh and how to do marketing! So yeah, Madonna, props to you. You're all right.

Here was one of my favorites: Men Without Hats. Check out their other vids if you get a chance. Their "Pop Goes The World" album was one of my top five favorite albums of all time.

Anyways, here's the quintessential Men Without Hats vid, Safety Dance. A classic.

Heh, check out this cover by contemporary ska band Save Ferris, I'm in love with the singer! Dexi singer Kevin Rowland (i think) shows up in cameo as the tow truck driver.

Here's the first vid I remember watching: Ah-ha's Take On Me. It was considered innovative for the time, being an amalgamation of rotoscope-style animation and live action.

Gee, I feel like I've gone back in time...

I loved MTV in the 80s. The music was great, the fashions were bright, loud and bizarre, it was generally a fun, happy place to get away from it all. Would that they'd actually play these kinds of videos again...

As some of you know, I'm a big U2 fan. Here's the first U2 video I saw (New Year's Day): http://youtube.com/watch?v=zHzLWLFTPPI

And another good early one (Gloria): http://youtube.com/watch?v=BKqp6VFjSFY

Ah! Beat me to "Take On Me". Really awesome bit of animation, classic 80's pop style music from...was it Sweden?

I was going to mention the "Hallway scene" was clearly inspired by the movie "Altered States"....it had a "hallway scene" too, that clearly made an impression on the makers of this vid!

Here's an amazingly fun vid from one of my all time favorite bands, the Hooters. I saw them in concert. Just incredible. Concert t-shirts were embarassing to wear, as they left you with the word "Hooters" emblazoned across your chest. The term actually ( I have heard) was a slang for the melodica, which they all play. 80's pop mixed liberally with tight folk instrumentation. Orgasmic. (Rather similar to the aforementioned Dexy's Midnight Runners, who ROCK.)

(1984) Holy crap those guys have been around forever.

I grew up on 80s alternative (My dad is a huge fan) on stuff such as the Jesus and Mary Chain, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and of course Joy Division. My parents still have their old MTV jackets and I have an old Bill the Cat shirt in my closet. *Loves Bloom County*

Ah, yes, I'd almost forgotten about them. I really liked them, too. Here's another Hooters video I remember from MTV (I think MTV cut the original ending).

RK---A-Ha was from Norway, acc to wikipedia.

I'm not surprised you weren't into Madonna. You're a bit older than me...I was a preteen in the mid eighties. I wanted to be Madonna when I was ten. Ten year olds don't always have the most *ahem* developed musical tastes. From your videos I can see you were more into the stuff college kids listened to at that time. Seriously, Madonna was the early eighties version of Britney Spears or New Kids On The Block---the preteens loved them but most college kids thought they were terribly cheesy. To be honest I can't listen to most old Madonna songs now, they sound too bubblegummy. Borderline? Holiday? Gag.

Anyway, here is another early favorite---The Cars with All I Want Is You. Paulina Poriskova the supermodel is the woman featured in the video---guys all over fell in love with her after this video came out. She later married Ric Ocasek, The Cars' lead singer.

Interesting note on Video Killed the Radio Star. There's an amazing cover done by Ben Folds Five, it's one of the best covers I've ever heard.

Norway! Right, I should have known that. Thanks!

Very good observation about the age differences affecting what we were into. I was in fact in college at the time. My younger cousins, however, were very into Madonna and New Kids. The old Madonna stuff never did it for me, but her later stuff (Live to Tell, La Isla Bonita, for instance) I have to admit I really, really liked.

Here's one by a female artist I have always loved. Cyndi Lauper. This is one of my favorite vids of all time. It's just so beautiful:
