  • pens and omelettes.....

Today I think the universe decided to play a joke on me.

    Omelettes have eggs in them?

A gentleman ordered a denver omelette today. His question after ordering was "and eggs come with that right?" After a bit more conversation I realized he did not know omelettes have eggs in them. The highlight of that interaction was getting to say the phrase "omelettes are eggs"

    Pen anyone?

Tonight I had people who did not know how to use a pen. I know they may be complicated, but if they have a cap take it off. If they have a click button, click it.

Table A was handed a simple pen with a cap. I watched as they tried to click it. and tried to turn the cap. When I cold contain my laughter I went over to help. They asked how the pen worked since nothing came out of the other end no matter what they did to the cap. You should have seen their amazement when I took the cap off.

Table B was handed a click pen. They tried writing with it three times before I went over to the table and clicked it for them.
My sanity has been dripping out of me my whole life, today they turned on the faucet.....

I don't know what to do but laugh. Are people seriously so narrow-minded that they can't realize what sort of pen they're holding? And that ignorant they don't know what they're ordering? I fear for the world of tomorrow.

Oh yes, And to add to it all table B tried to give me a check. There is a big bright yellow sign that says NO CHECKS on the front door.

Ah, yes, the Great Pen Dilemma: how to get the ink out? Shaking isn't going to work. Neither will LICKING THE TIP of MY pen -- it isn't a quill! Repeatedly bopping the tip of the cap against the receipt I'm trying to get you to sign will not magically cause your signature to bloom there, and no matter how many times you push on the other end, you will not be able to click that particular pen.

The lady in question did all of the above while steadfastly ignoring my attempts to get her attention so I could help her out. She was going to get it herself, dammit, no matter how long it took. I finally wound up plucking my pen right out of her fingers, uncapping it, and handing it back to her with the ballpoint facing the right way, so that all she had to do was lower her hand and write. I held on to the cap, not wanting to complicate things...

I really hope she was just having a bad day. Or maybe just coming off of a night shift. I'm also glad no one was in line behind her.

Whenever I give people pens to sign their names for credit purchases I always make sure the cap is off the pen or the pen is clicked for them. I mean doing this just avoids any hassle.

And I'm sure you enjoyed every second of that.

what's bad is when someone wants to borrow your pen...and all you have is a fountain pen.

most of the time they have no idea how to use them and think"if i press down harder it'll start writing!"

So, usually they start engraving the paper and almost break my pen. i try to not loan those out because of that.

Omelet Man is the ultimate mama's boy. She obviously never let him into the kitchen to do anything. I thought one of the first things people learn to make for themselves is an omelet.

I also click the pen/take off the cap before handing it to people. But isn't it a sad commentary on the collective IQ of customers that we feel the need to do this?

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

I used to carry around a pen that was pointed on both ends (the pen tip and the back of the pen)... I would hand it to customers with the pen already twisted out, with the pen tip down, and more often than not, the customer would flip the pen over and start writing with the wrong end! And they wondered why their credit slip signatures were so fucking light! "YOU used the wrong end of the PEN!"
                          "I call murder on that!"

                            Not me.

One of the first things I learned how to make was pot roast.

I still have never even attempted to make an omelette.

My omelettes always end up as scrambled-eggs-with-things-embedded-in-it. I can never get it to turn out like a nice pretty omelette. It tastes good though, so I don't really care.
