  • Pick up for Abraham Lincoln

I didn't know where else to put this but it's just a funny story. There's this restaurant that always specifically asks for your last name when you call in for takeout.

    me: *orders a hamburger*

dude: okay can i have your number and your last name please

    me: 555-555-5555

dude: ok, i didn't catch your name..

    me: abraham lincoln

(i'm thinking it doesn't matter if it's my real name, it's just something so that they know who ordered what.)

anyway he starts cracking up but i said it seriously and didn't give any indication that i was kidding.

him: ok, um that'll be 6 bucks in 10 minutes.

    me: k, thanks.

so i finally get there and walk in

    me: pick up for abraham

dude: *just stares at me and starts laughing* sorry i thought you were a prank caller. it'll be another 10 minutes.

i thought it was pretty funny and just went over to blockbuster while i was waiting since i was heading there anyway. he gave me a dollar discount and extra bacon even though i told him it wasn't necessary. lolz

One of my customers, a middle-aged man accompanied by wife and several adult children, thought it was oh-so-hilarious when I asked if I could have "a name" for the order. He told me I already had a name: Sylvia. Says it right there on my name tag. I gave him a smile and asked for a different one. He told me "Esmerelda". I entered it into the computer without a twitch, and made sure to call each part of his three-part order with "Esmerelda". He laughed harder each time, and the family left happy.

I don't know what it is about obviously fake names, but human nature seems to find it hilarious.

When I was in high school I made videos for a while. I went by a nickname called "The Dustman". It was a homage to the Dust Brothers who are a production duo and they made the Fight Club soundtrack. We had to sign our names on a whiteboard if we were leaving our video class to record and I always left it as The Dustman. I even briefly considered the notion of producing videos and going by that as a mini career while I was in college.

It never dawned on me to give a fake name. I am with sliceanddice on that. If they thought I was a prank caller, then I would be tempted to go to another place.

From the episode of Millenium I watched the other day:

A confession: when I was a teenager I used to ride the Greyhound a lot to visit my dad. I always got a kick about giving different names when I bought the ticket at the counter. It was surprisingly easy since back then they wouldn't bother to check ID if you were a walk in ticket buyer and paid in cash. I probably couldn't get away with that nowadays.

My bet is that most people who use fake names are pranksters. So, that means the restaurant loses a lot of food if they take them seriously.

In most places where they ask for a name to call you when your order's done, I usually give a fake name. Mostly because I've rarely found anyone who can transcribe my real name well, unless i over enunciate it.

I ordered a pizza for Julius Caesar once, for pickup at 5:12...

Well, I walked into the pizza joint at 5:12 and lo and behold, my pizza was waiting for me. But, the name they wrote on the slip? Julia Ceaser.

                        WHAT!?

I use fake names daily. I hate hate hate my legal name. However, my fake names aren't famous figures in history.

Well, sure. I give my name as Sylvia even thought that's nowhere on my birth certificate. But if the restaurant can't tell that it's a fake name, they're less likely to dub you a prank caller. So if you gave your name as Jennifer Smith, they'd probably take it, but if you gave your name as Jennifer Anistan, they probably wouldn't.
