  • does this email make me sucky?

ok, my turn to ask if I'm crossing the line. I sent this email off to UTA complaining about their bus service this morning.

The route 39 going west pulled into the meadowbrook station at about 8:38, 3 minutes before route 41 is supposed to leave and the bus had already left. In all honesty at 8:35 when we were at the stop light at 3900 south and west temple I didn't see the 41 bus in the station. I remember the specific times because I was worried about missing the connection and getting off the bus thinking that 41 must be a few minutes late. It is apparent however that either it left at least 5 minutes early or it did not run at all because the bus I finally did catch came through at only a few minutes before 9 (only a few minutes late for the bus after the one I should have been able to connect with). About just over 5 minutes before that though one of the new hybrid busses came through (and most of the people at the station, myself included were saying thank God the bus is finally here) and the driver just pulled around ran into what I believe is the employee restroom and ran out and drove off again. I'm confused, if it is the case of a driver being sick or something like that the bus not being able to run, but why then wouldn't this bus that isn't doing anything else be put on the route or if it was the case of the driver being really late why wouldn't he have picked up passengers, and I have no idea how that would fit into the driver being there and leaving over 5 minutes early. This entire episode is giving me very little confidence in using the UTA system, especially considering the recent rate hikes. I guess all I really would appreciate is an explanation of what was going on and how I can avoid getting into the same situation again.

-though I will admit the person I called at about 8:50 on the phone I was really sucky with, it's not included in the email but you know, she was just as sucky back and she works a union job for a government agency, she's paid more than enough to deal with it (oh and by sucky, I mean I was loud and angry, I did not though use profanities or insult her personally, both things that at my job we must tolerate to a certain extent, first time let it off, second time ask them to stop, third time warn them you will hang up, fourth time hang up).

You come across as a bit pushy, but in this circumstance I'd say your response was actually very polite and reasonable. So no, I don't think you were sucky at all.

I don't think you were sucky or pushy at all.
Bus services are supposed to run on time, and while a reasonable amount of time between the scheduled arrivals and departures should be allowed for things like trafic, weather and any unforseen problems, if a bus is flat out not showing up while others that could take its place are going by without explanation then yes, you have good reason to be angry.

I wrote my transit service two long letters based on the service of my bus route.
It was ALWAYS late, sometimes didn't show, the drivers on that route were beyond rude, they didn't stop when people pulled the string, etc.
Well I guess I wasn't the only one complaining, because service is running very well these days.

You need to speak up to get results, and it's not as though you're hollering at them in a crowded store demanding answers, we're politely asking for an explanation of the issues.
Good for you for writing them.

Nope, that's good. Honestly, I might've been harsher.

The only way they can correct such bad service is to be aware of it. If you posted a curse filled diatribe that demanded compensation, THEN it would be sucky.

it wouldn't do me much good to ask for compensation... the bus pass is included in my tuition so they'd just say, hey you never paid us to begin with (yes I did, my student fees went up to cover the extra cost of the bus passes, but that's beside the point) so we don't owe you anything back.

Most definitely NOT pushy or rude. I've found that some drivers will wait at desigated TIMED locations (especially those on the schedule) until the time they are supposed to be there, then continue. They stay on time without effecting anything. Many others, though, just rush through, and if they're 10 minutes early, oh well. Great for those on the bus, horrific for those who's schedule depends on transfers.

You probably won't get much out of them with a response, but hopefully it'll make them more aware of their suckiness.

the thing though is that I was transferring from one EOL to another EOL (theoretically both buses are supposed to arrive at roughly the same time and wait about 5 minutes to give the drivers a couple minute break) so even if the bus had come in early, it shouldn't have left early... if anything you'd think that the driver would want to stay as long as they can because that is about the only breaks that they get...

Definitely not sucky. I've had to phone my transit system more than once to complain about my bus showing up either five minutes early or fifteen minutes late, both times causing me to be late for work. The bus only runs that route every half hour, so a bit of lateness does make a big difference.

yeah, I would have added the part about the call center employee hanging up on me, but I know they would tell me one of two things, either it's outsourced and there is nothing they can do or that it's unionized and they don't want to go up against the union over a lazy call center employee. Yes, I was yelling, I was pissed (being 5 minutes early to a guaranteed timepoint that the bus supposedly cannot leave before a certain time and finding out it's already gone) but I did not use profanities or insult the person... if she worked at my call center she would have been terminated on the spot for doing that... even if she had followed IHG policy and advised the person to stop or be hung up on, she would still get a write up because a manager would listen to the call and say there was no reason to hang up...

though I think I can explain all of the systems flaws in one sentence, it is lead by a person who does not ride the bus or train. That makes about as much sense as a hotel chain being run by someone who has never even stayed in a hotel.
