  • Valentine's Day Massacre

The bar was insanely busy last night. We knew we would have a fair few people in drinking, but we didn' t think we would have many eating. Our place isn't exactly...romantic.

Food was flying out. Me and a co-worker were struggling because there was so much going out and no time to clean and bring things back in, so the bar was a state. It literally looked like a giant had picked the building up, shook it like a snow globe and then put it back down again.

So, we get sucky overprotective dad!

SOD: Can you come over and clean my table please? My family want to sit down.
Me: Sure sir, I'll be over as soon as I can.

I was so busy it took me over five minutes to get there. I cleaned the mess off the table, gave it a wipe and thought it was over. Nope. He walks up to me while I am trying to balance four very hot meals in my arms.

SOD: You call THAT clean?? GET OVER THERE AND CLEAN IT AGAIN!
Me: I am VERY busy sir, I'll be over as soon as I can.

I went over and wiped it again. There was nothing wrong with it. In fact he was probably sat at the cleanest table in the place.

SOD: Its ridiculous that I've had to ask you twice! My children do not want to eat off a dirty table!

It took all my strength not to say "That's why we provide plates sir"

    I went to walk away.

SOD: Wait! It's still not clean enough!
Me: I'm sorry, I don't have time for this.

I just carried on. Every time I walked out the kitchen he shouted "OI!" or "CLEAN MY TABLE!" or "GET OVER HERE!" I just ignored him. For some reason, he did not ask my co-worker to clean his table, or anyone else on the bar. He didn't ask to see the manager, which fuelled my belief that he was just being an arse to me for the sake of it.

8pm hits. Children are not allowed in the bar after that time, but if they're eating, we let them finish their meals. I just wanted rid of this guy.

Me: I'm sorry sir, but we are only licenced to have children on the premisis before 8pm. You are going to have to leave.
    SOD: What??
Me: It's quite clearly posted on all our entrances and on the walls...

I walked away. I had to do some office shit, but watched on the CCTV as they put on their coats and walked out.

I couldn't believe him. He could quite clearly see that I was insanely busy. Every other customer could, I got tipped loads, each customer saying "Get yourself a strong drink for when you finish."

    I did...several in fact.

    What an idiot.

I too was amazed at how busy every place around was last night, steak houses, etc. We went Italian and I tipped 33%, waiter was shocked, I was pleased.

Hope your next shift goes better.

He didn't ask anyone else because it wasn't a clean table he wanted. What he wanted was to bully someone.

His children must have a wonderful life living with him.

If you'd gone Dutch, would that have meant you tipping 50%?

Yesterday, DH and I met with the lawyer handling the case about the truck that hit me. He offered to take us to lunch "(his) present to us for Valentine's Day." (but I'm sure I'll end up paying for it!)

It was a medium-high end Italian place, so it should have been good food and excellent service. Well, the food was ok, at least. I'm just hoping the waiter was brand new. We were seated in such a way that I had to look straight into the sun to talk to one of my table mates. The waiter passed my tea to me over the table. He brought the food out, and set it one one of those portable stands next to the table, then turns to check out and bus the table behind us, passing the dirty plates over our food that is sitting there.

Out lawyer paid the tab, and I did not see how much the ticket was for, or how much he may have tipped, but that tip should have been a lot smaller than my normal. And no, they were not yet very busy. There were still several empty tables near us.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.
