  • Please, tell me how much to charge you.

Yesterday mostly did not suck. I got to eat all of my lunch. While it was still warm!! Nonetheless, one person did feel the need to piss in my porridge.

    Me:

    OF: Old Fart

Me: Good morning, can I help you?

OF: I need a taillight for my 87 S15 pickup. And it better not cost more than $10!!!

Me: I'll look that up for you, but I guarantee it's going to be more than $10.

OF: Like hell it will! I won't buy it if it's more than that.

Me: I'm not looking it up then. It is more than that.

OF: You refusing to serve me?

Me: No sir, but if I look it up and it's more than $10, will you buy it?

    OF: NO!

    Me: .................

    OF: .................

Me: Anything else I can do for you?

OF: This place is a rip-off! Crooks! <leaves>

Yes, we rip you off. You, though are so clever. You thought you could get around that by telling me what you'll spend, even if it's below my cost. Bravo!!

He wanted the whole tail lamp. The bulb would have been about $2. But yes, if they can install it themselves, shut up and do it. Don't ask me what it will cost. At $98 an hour shop rate, you wont like it.

I had an 84 S15. If I remember correctly, you have to drop the tailgate and twist out a couple of torx screws to remove the tail light, or even to get at the bulbs, but it''s a simple process, unless you don't have a Torx screwdriver. That said, even Auto Zone charges $88 for one. I can just imagine what the GMC dealer would want. Good luck getting a cracked one off eBay for that amount.

Maybe he saw one at a garage sale in '87? Silly silly people.

          And aren't warm lunches grand?

Strangely enough, we charge by vehicle type/mass.

I had a guy ring in for a pass, and while doing the thing, he says he's got a 'ute'. I ask, what sort of 'ute', and he tells me 'a ute'.

So, guessing where this is going, I ask "is it a rodeo or bravo, etc?".

"It's a rodeo, but you're going to charge me for a car, or I'll go around" (ie - not use our 'service')

"That's fine, you can go around then"

Whether I agree with the pricing or not, or the system as a whole or not, I don't see why you should get it cheaper than anybody else in the same situation!!! Especially if you're going to be an arrogant prick like that!

i was gonna ask if it was the whole light or not, yah that can get a bit pricey. i had to have mine replaced the whole thing along with a rewire to who knows where, cost about 500$ needless to say i had driven around without a tail light for 4 years because i couldnt afford it, and since i had to take out a loan to fix my car i had them take care of it.

98$ an hour that is crazy. our shop rate is set by mitchell, usually the installs run about 22.50 - 40$ for a bulb. (hmm maybe we are at the same rate, cause it will list it in how long it should take as set. ie install if an air filter should take .2 - .4 hours depending on how complicated the car, there. they also start at 22.50.

we usually do free install of air filter with the oil changes, people freak out when they just want the filter and i charge them out the wazoo for it.

Yes it is, but that's the norm around these parts for a dealership.

                          Yes it would.

It was chicken and mashed taters.

yah dealership, ok. i have yet to understand why everything costs more over there. although i must say the saturn dealer did have a better price on a belt and installation than the shop i work for lol however that was about it

of course my shop started doing the work we were doing right after my car gets out of the dealer (i figured if im gonna have that much work done i might as well have it done by a dealer) i looked at my boss and said thanks alot jerk, i could have gotten the parts for cost.
