I Hate SCs who invoke the phrase "it's the law" whenever things don't go their way . I mean I really, really, loathe them Well wouldn't you know we got one of those bozos this weekend.

    AL: Armchair lawyer
    A: Associate

AL: I want to return this game.
A: Okay, <processes return> Alright this'll go back onto your credit card.
AL: What ??? No gimme cash.
A: Well, you used your credit card to pay for the item, so we have to refund it back to your card.
AL: No! The law's on my side. This is false advertising.<um, what?> This is fraud. Get me a manager! Now!
<A calls for a manager as (bad) luck would have it it's our caver, meaning she always caves to SCs and their idiotic demands.>
    M: May i help you?
AL: Yes i need money back. But she says it has to go back to mycard. This is fraud, this is false advertising, this is bait and switch!!!
M: Give him his money back.
    A: But..
M: NOW!! <To AL> I am sorry you had to go through this.
    AL: A should be fired.
M: If I had the ability, she would be gone.

A almost goes after M but my fellow stockman and i stop her.
    ME: A, A! She ain't worth it.
SM: Yeah, she's not worth losing your job.
    A: I hate her.
ME: Yeah, take a number. Talk to R <our store manager> about this.
    A: I bet it's a stolen receipt.
    Me: Probably.

A: Well, i am afraid you will have to bring it in...

I can't stand spineless managers who give in to idiot customers. You do your job & then they turn around and make you look like an ass cause you're following company procedures. & then the idiot customer wants you fired cause you were doing what you were supposed to & it's not good enough for them. Can't win!

I would have told that "manager" that if they wanted to give that idiot cash back, that THEY could do it. Then you would be in no way at fault. What is she gonna do, write you up for NOT breaking company policy?

When I worked at a petrol station I would ID anyone I thought was underage (an odd concept it seems). If I wasn't sure I would ID them.
Sometimes people would say but [my manager] knows me, and occasionally the manager (or another member of staff) would say to serve them. I stuck to my guns as it was my name on the receipt if there was a problem.

The law is the law and policy is policy - managers shouldn't just ignore that in case they annoy one customer and the manager certainly shouldn't have told the customer they wanted to fire an employee!

So... How exactly did they come into her possession if she did not pay for them?
Anyone else here who thinks there is ANOTHER reason besides a "domestic violence situation" to cause the cops to be looking for her?

If this were me, when the manager apologized to the Customer for following policy, I would have signed off the register and told the MOD to do it her/him self. No way I would get my hands near that mess. Also, if your company has an anonymous report line, I would definitely give them a heads up.

This is Wally World we're talking about, right?

And didn't somebody on another thread say Wally World managers are generally spineless puddles of goo because if the customer complains to corporate, corporate caves in anyway and gives the customer a gift card for their trouble? Well there you go.

As for the manager telling the customer she'd fire the associate if she could (which I am assuming happened with the associate right there and listening)--I would not blame the associate one bit for confronting the manager.
I don't care how much you dislike a person or if you're trying to save face with an angry customer. You DO NOT say that about an employee while they're right there listening. It's the same thing as coaching an employee in front of a customer. It's showing up an employee for no reason other than you can.

Is there anyone higher up you can complain to? Cuz that is out of order; just like the way the IM of the garden centre used to tell off employees in front of customers. That manager should be the one to be fired, not you. What a total bitch!

We all know there is no "law of returns," and we can all agree that manager was way out of line with 1) enabling customer behavior, 2) mis-treating an associate. . .#3) Breaking the VISA merchant's agreement (MasterCard has similar language in their agreement last time I checked) From page 11:

                      "Do not
provide cash refunds for returned merchandise originally purchased with a Visa
card. Visa does not permit cash refunds for any credit or debit card transaction.
By issuing credits, you protect your customers from individuals who might
fraudulently make a purchase on their Visa account and then return the
                      merchandise for cash."

If your company has a tip line, it would be prudent of you to call them up, being that you are concerned for the responsible handling of transactions and ask that they remind said sucky manager that violating the VISA merchant's agreement can ultimately lead to your entire company not being able to accept VISA cards. Consider it your good deed of the day.

HELL NO!!!!!!! That B..ch needs to be fired! I never recomend going over managments head unless warrented and this warrents it. Go above her and let them know whats going on. 1. She disrespected you espacily infront of a customer NO! that should never be done. Had it done to me and a lot of good assocates have quit over it. I dont care if I hate the Assosiate I will never disrespect them infront of a customer! 2. What she did was stealing! In my company if they catch you giving cash for any payment other then cash then thats our job. A couple of years ago they found someone doing it in customer service for their friends and found out that they milked the company for thousands of dollers that way. Hell Im surprised that the regester even let her. When we refund something we have to take all kinds of info and if something is a little off we have to put it on a gift card. Sorry I know this is a little jumbled but I took it personaly! Becuase of a supervisor like that I had to move departments or I would have seriously messed her up. After a couple of years I had to turn down a really good job becuase she was now the manager there. And as I heard it from HR I wasnt the only one to turn down a job because of her.

Man, you'd think maybe HR would get a bit of a clue at that point.
